Prop 13 Saved By Lawmakers’ Misconduct?

Because of the conviction of one member of the state Senate, and the indictment of a second, Proposition 13 — and taxpayers who rely on its protections — may have slipped the noose being prepared for it by majority Democrats in the Legislature.

Senator Rod Wright, a Los Angeles Democrat, has taken a leave of absence after having been convicted, but not yet sentenced, on eight felony counts related to misstating his residence for the purpose of running for office. Senator Ronald Calderon, a Democrat from Montebello, has been asked to resign by Senate leaders after being indicted for public corruption. The self-destruction of these two lawmakers has a profound impact on the dynamics of the Legislature. Continue reading→

The California Legislature reconvenes this week and the politicians may be on the verge of a major miscalculation because they don’t understand how real people think.

The members of the political class in Washington and our state capitols are certain they know what Americans are thinking. Just ask them. Yesterday’s elections, here in California included a real eye-opener for the Democrats, who have a virtual lock on Sacramento, in both legistlative houses.

The Republican candidate in the 45th Assembly District, Susan Shelley, ended up about even with her Democratic opponent, Matt Dababneh, even though they are in a solidly blue district. How did she do it?

Scott Lay, the publisher of the Nooner, a California political newsletter, thinks that Prop. 13 and the growing ObamaCare backlash could be part of the answer. Prop 13: Who’s the Fairest of Them all?

Almost twenty years ago, Money Magazine sponsored a debate and panel discussion at UCLA on Proposition 13. When one of the panelists, with ties to the public sector, began to assert vigorously that the tax cutting measure was unfair, he was challenged by Craig Stubblebine, Professor of Political Economy at Claremont McKenna College. Stubblebine said he would be happy to discuss fairness, but charged that the critic’s true motivation was simply the desire for more revenue. The Proposition 13 critic sheepishly conceded the point. Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association Taxpayer Conference

California taxpayers are burdened with the nation’s highest gas taxes, income taxes, sales taxes and corporate taxes in the West. Our state’s high taxes and unreasonable regulations have driven jobs and productive citizens away. Now, the Sacramento politicians are working to abolish Proposition 13 protection for homeowners, as well as small businesses and rental property.

At the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association’s annual Taxpayer Conference, which will be held this year in Orange County, citizen taxpayer advocates will have the opportunity to be educated and equipped for the upcoming battles in support of taxpayer rights. Continue reading→
