In a secretly-recorded conference call on Monday, Democratic US congressional candidate Pete Aguilar can be heard telling supporters that “the United States should back off from military and economic support to Israel. American support of Israel,and really Israel as a people and political power, is a drag on the United States, and frankly, the world,” according to the Jewish Times. The article also alleged that Aguilar had compared Hamas to the Founding Fathers.
But the website in question turned out to be a fake one.
“False attacks and the spreading of misinformation is always disappointing, especially when voters are faced with such an important choice in selecting their next representative,” said Aguilar’s spokeswoman Tatiana Winograd. “But these allegations against Mayor Aguilar, at a time of increased conflict and violence in the Middle East, are especially troubling.
