In trying to make themselves into another KCET (with possibly the same long-term prospects), Orange County’s PBS SoCal public TV channel is abandoning its viewers and the ties it long-developed here when it was the lonely OC-focused, Huntington Beach-based KOCE, UHF Channel 50. Per the union-funded Voice of OC via the OC Business Journal: Local PBS Cancels ‘Real Orange,’ OC’s Main TV News Show at year-end.

Voice of OC, PBS fault Moorlach again

Unionistas Norberto Santana and Nick Berardino
Once again, the union-funded Voice of OC has singled out Supervisor John Moorlach for taking County pension benefits that he’s been entitled to since he was made Orange County’s Treasurer-Tax Collector 18 years ago.
The Voice partners with PBS SoCal (KOCE-Channel 50) to produce a weekly summary of issues focused on city and county government using Editor-in-Chief Norberto Santana doing a Q&A with the co-hosts of KOCE’s Real Orange news program. This week’s segment kicks off with Santana slamming Moorlach, OC organized labor’s favorite target, for exercising his right to a pension just as hundreds of OC Employee’s Association members are also entitled. Updated: OCN Again?
We were intrigued with this from the union-funded Voice of OC last month: Owner of OC Register Considering Purchase of Los Angeles Times. The Register’s Opinion Editor, Brian Calle, had also mentioned it to a CRA meeting we’d attended.
The LA Times might just be a bargain about now, with a rumored asking price in the $300-400 million range. Per LA Observed in December:
In 2006, David Geffen reportedly made a cash offer of $2 billion for the LA Times alone. Now it will fetch much less, if it comes on the market. Orange County Register owner Aaron Kushner said last week he would be interested in acquiring the Tribune papers. “We clearly have the means and the team by which to look seriously at the Tribune papers and, from the outside, they may very well have enough of the elements that we’re looking for,” he told reporters. Kushner said it makes sense for Tribune to sell the papers as a group.
Agran v. Spitzer, Round II
The union-funded Voice of OC posted a remarkable video today — 70 seconds of Irvine Councilman/Great Park Boardmember Larry Agran ripping his County Supervisor, Todd Spitzer, a new one. This was a return volley to the dressing down that Spitzer gave him at the January 8th Irvine City Council meeting. Continue reading
