The purpose of this Symposium is to provide local policy makers and the public objective, impartial information about the environmental impact of oil extraction in north Orange County. Our goal is to secure an informed and impartial panel to provide policy makers and the public with access to experts in the field who will be able to speak to what is happening in our communities and how it may impact local groundwater, air quality, and earthquakes. Failing To Build Pipelines Is Criminal Negligence

The Canadian Royal Mounties now believe that the mile-long runaway oil train that killed 15 and left 35 people missing in a small Quebec town may have been an act of criminal negligence for failing to set the brakes properly. But the real criminal negligence is that oil from booming fracking operations in North Dakota must be shipped by trains over a thousand mile to refiners in Nova Scotia, because regulators fought building American pipelines and refineries to protect and subsidize railroads, such as Burlington Northern Railway Company that controls half the business. Given the loss of life, the Obama Administration and Congress will soon announce approval of a number of new pipelines, including the Keystone XL. Continue reading→

The world knows of California’s unemployment, spending, and budget problems. With over $1 trillion in public debt, the Golden State’s fiscal situation is surely challenging. Amazingly, a giant gift was laid at California’s doorstep in the form of abundant oil fields accessible by fracking. Rather than promote the budget-soothing jobs and the tax revenue that comes with it, California Democrats have lined up to stop it.

California is the land of misplaced priorities, highest-in-the-nation taxes and even higher regulations. Recently, the California Public Policy Center, relying primarily on official reports prepared by the State Controller and State Treasurer, determined that “the outstanding debt owed by California’s state and local governments, using responsible actuarial assumptions, is almost certainly in excess of $1.0 trillion.” Continue reading→

Voters surveyed in the recent California Field Poll regard the current economy by a 72% to 16% margin as bad times versus good times. National surveys demonstrate that this pessimistic appraisal that only a small percentage are benefiting from the economy is not confined to the Golden State. The Rasmussen Poll reports that over the last four years Americans’ concern about the prospects for their financial future has risen to an all-time high. Only 27% of Americans still believe it is possible to work hard and get rich, while just 25% believe the economy will be stronger a year from today. But due to the opportunity to leverage our water resources to dramatically increase oil and gas production, the United States is on the verge of an economic Renaissance that will spread prosperity to a very broad cross-section of our nation. Surging U.S. oil production could free us from Middle East oil tyrants

The United States is on track to achieve independence from imported Middle East oil within the next seven years due to the boom in domestic and North American energy development. Consequently, the United States would have eventually ratcheted down our huge military presence in the Middle East defending oil imports. But just like television scenes of the attack on the United States embassy during the 1968 TET Offensive destroyed public support for the Viet Nam War, last week’s television images of protests against American embassies has devastated public support for a continuing military presence in the Middle East. The American public will soon demand a crash program to exploit domestic energy resources to facilitate a Middle East withdrawal. Continue reading→
