New Director Appointed for County Waste and Recycling Department

Santa Ana, Calif. – Tom Koutroulis has been appointed to the position of Director of Waste & Recycling (OCWR) for the County of Orange. Koutroulis was selected following a nationwide search and a competitive recruitment process.

Koutroulis has dedicated his professional life to the waste industry and has more than 25 years of experience in a variety of roles. He has spent the last 13 years of his career in leadership roles with Waste Management, Inc. and most recently served as the Senior Manager for Organics Project Development. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Irvine and a Master of Business Administration in Technology Management and Implementation from the University of Phoenix. OC Waste & Recycling Partnership with Inside the Outdoors Earns Coveted Golden Bell Award

California School Boards Association Recognizes Project Zero Waste

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Project Zero Waste, a service-learning program developed through a partnership between the County of Orange, OC Waste & Recycling, and the Orange County Department of Education’s (OCDE) Inside the Outdoors, has earned the California School Boards Association’s highly regarded Golden Bell Award. The award was announced at a ceremony on Saturday, December 5, 2015.

The Orange County Office of Education’s, Project Zero Waste program is an Inside the Outdoors service-learning environmental science program developed in partnership with the County of Orange—OC Waste & Recycling. Every year Project Zero Waste engages more than 40,000 students in project-based lessons that transform classroom concepts into real life action. Continue reading→

Mark Tettemer named to the O.C. Waste Management Commission

Mark Tettemer Named to Orange County Waste Management Commission

SANTA ANA, Calif. — On Tuesday, September 22, 2015 the Orange County Board of Supervisors appointed Mark Tettemer to the Orange County Waste Management Commission. Mr. Tettemer, a long-time Orange County resident, was nominated to serve on the Commission by Fifth District Supervisor and Board Vice Chairman, Lisa Bartlett. The Waste Management Commission is an advisory commission to the Board of Supervisors on matters related to solid waste management, including waste diversion and recycling.

“We are very glad to have Mark Tettemer join the Commission and bring us his knowledge and public service experience,” said Supervisor Bartlett. “He will be a valuable asset to the Commission.” Continue reading→

OC Waste & Recycling Exemplifies Public Engagement

WINS TWO GOLDEN HUB OF INNOVATION AWARDS FROM ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA CITIES-ORANGE COUNTY

The Association of California Cities-Orange County last week awarded the Golden Hub of Innovation to OC Waste & Recycling (OCWR) for two of its programs:

Community Outreach Ambassador Program; and Landfill Good Neighbor Policy.

All Orange County cities, special districts and public agencies are eligible for the awards, which are given annually in several categories. OC Waste & Recycling garnered two awards in the category of Public Engagement. “OC Waste & Recycling works hard to be a good neighbor when it comes to solid waste management. That includes implementing best management practices in operations and pro-active engagement with landfill neighbors,” said Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Todd Spitzer upon hearing of the awards. Solid Waste Association of North America Recognizes Agency’s Commitment to Proper Waste Disposal

OC Waste & Recycling will receive SWANA’s Excellence Award for its Olinda Alpha Landfill in Brea. The facility is a modern landfill using contemporary technology and innovation to deliver cost-effective waste disposal services to more than 3,100,000 residents of Orange County.

“The second largest landfill in California and home to the third largest landfill gas-to-electricity conversion facility in the U.S., Olinda Alpha Landfill is financially sound, a proud steward of the environment and public trust, makes employee and customer safety its top priority, and is a good neighbor to its surrounding urban community,” said Raymond Hull, administrative manager for OC Waste & Recycling.

The usual O.C. hacks line up for an OCTA $4.7 million freeway PR contract
