From various sources, this story’s batted around the Internet for the last few days: Study: CA Worst-Governed State in America. So, it wasn’t a bit surprising to see an immediate example of how Jerry Brown, the liberal Democrats have and the teachers union that funded its campaign lied about Proposition 30 in a Register editorial this a.m.: Prop. 30’s pension boost. The only remaining question is how much of 30’s taxes will actually get into CalSTRS’ pension accounts, and not to the schools where Brown and the unions led voters to believe it positively was going. Democratic 72nd Assembly District candidate Joe Dovinh, who came in third in the Open Primary on June 5, has announced that he will be running for the 34th State Senate District in 2014, in an email message he sent to supporters today. The 34th S.D. is currently held by Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana).
Dovinh lives in Garden Grove, which appears to be entirely in the 34th. Other cities in the 34th include Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Westminster, Midway City, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and part of Anaheim. According to the final voter registration data for the 34th, 19.4% of the voters have Asian surnames and 24% of the voters in the district have Latino surnames.
Assemblyman Jose Solorio (pictured above with Dovinh), who is terming out this year in the 69th Assembly District, will likely run for the 34th S.D. in two years. Solorio may be largely forgotten by 2014 and many Latino voters are mad at him for supporting Tom Daly for the 69th A.D. Continue reading
Earlier this week, the Leslie Daigle for the 74th Assembly District campaign issued a press release announcing that her Republican opponent, Assemblyman Allan Mansoor, had only scored 58% on the Orange County Business Council’s (OCBC) “Business Report Card.” That would have been the lowest Business Report Card Grade for any of our Orange County Legislators.
However the OCBC issued a correction of its Legislative Scorecard today, explaining in a press release that the transposition of one vote caused the score for Mansoor to be miscalculated at a lower rate than it should have been. As it turned out, his correct score was only 72% pro-business legislative votes aligned with OCBC’s policy positions.
Now think about that score for a moment. That is a C grade for a guy who is SUPPOSED to be business-friendly. Continue reading
Update: The Mercury News has posted exclusive text messages that Nadia Lockyer apparently sent to her ex-lover, Stephen Chikhani.
Alameda County Supervisor Nadia Lockyer, wife of California state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, announced today that she’s in rehabilitation for a substance-abuse problem after an extramarital affair that she says culminated in a Feb. 3 beating by her ex-lover, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
We now know the identity of her ex-lover – Stephen Chikhani, 35, of San Jose — as reported by the Oakland Tribune. He said Tuesday night that “the only truths in the Lockyers’ account of what happened are “that I have a record and that they were separated. … Pretty much everything else was false, was made up by her husband.”

“As of today, there is no warrant for my arrest,” he said. “I tried calling the police; they won’t call me back, so I feel like I’m being pushed into a corner.”
After having Nadia Lockyer’s statement read to him, Chikhani said he needed to consult his lawyer again before speaking any further.
The East Bay Express also posted a new article indicating that Nadia Lockyer has looked awful for quite some time:
Rumors of some sort of addiction have been rampant in the corridors of county politics for months. Lockyer’s physical appearance had become a noticeable cause for concern. While appearing at a city council meeting in Hayward last month she appeared frail and gaunt with deep-set eyes and cheekbones showing greater prominence due to weight loss.
We broke this story locally on Saturday, here. Nadia Lockyer grew up in Orange County, where she was known as Nadia Maria Davis. She worked for both U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez and current State Senator Lou Correa (back when he was a State Assemblyman).
I am also hearing some unbelievable rumors about the Lockyer marriage. I cannot confirm them and won’t post them until I can do so, but trust me you will be shocked if these rumors turn out to be true.
Anaheim Council Members Gail Eastman and Kris Murray are members of the Advisory Committee of the SOAR (Support our Anaheim Resort) PAC (Political Action Committee. Both were endorsed by SOAR when they won seats on the Anaheim City Council in 2010. Yet they both voted last month to give “up to $158 million in tax incentives to build luxury hotels in the Disneyland area, despite opposition by city staff members,” according to the O.C. Register.
“The city will not provide any money up front for the $283-million hotel project, which is to include 866 four-star rooms. Instead, the hotels would get money later from hotel bed taxes. In Anaheim, guests pay 15 percent of their room rentals for the bed tax, which normally goes to the city,” according to another article in the O.C. Register. Continue reading
