When are Election Results Final?

Post-Election Canvass Under Way in California Counties

SACRAMENTO – In the 31 days following every statewide election, county elections officials complete their official canvass by ensuring every eligible ballot is counted accurately and then certify final election results to the Secretary of State. For the June 5 Presidential Primary Election, county elections officials have until July 3 to complete the canvass and until July 6 to report their certified vote counts to the Secretary. Monday is Voter Registration Deadline for California’s June Primary

SACRAMENTO – Want to be a part of California’s first statewide top-two primary next month? May 21 is the last day to register to vote in the June 5 primary election.

“Filling out a voter registration form takes less than five minutes, yet every election cycle there are eligible Californians who bow out of participating in democracy. With the online tools on the Secretary of State website, registering to vote or verifying your existing registration are easier than ever,” said Secretary of State Debra Bowen, California’s chief elections official. “By registering to vote by Monday, you’ll have a hand in choosing which candidates will move on to the November general election and whether some ballot measures become law.”
Voter registration closes 15 days before each election in California. People can fill out the Secretary of State’s online voter registration form at www.sos.ca.gov/elections/register-to-vote then just print, sign and mail it. (The form is even pre-addressed to the registrant’s county elections office.) June Primary Voting Begins Monday

SACRAMENTO – While Election Day isn’t until June 5, millions of Californians who opt for the convenience of voting by mail can begin casting their ballots as early as Monday.

“When your mailbox is your polling place you can vote any time in the comfort of your own home,” said Secretary of State Debra Bowen, the state’s chief elections officer. “With so many voters choosing to vote by mail, Election Day is more like election month. However, no matter how you vote, make sure your county elections office receives your ballot by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day because postmarks don’t count.” Continue reading→

California’s Top-Two Primary: What Voters Should Know
SACRAMENTO – As the June 5 primary election nears, California Secretary of State Debra Bowen today reiterated the balloting differences and similarities under the Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act.  While the top-two primary law took effect in 2011, the June 2012 primary will be the first statewide election conducted under the new rules that changed how state constitutional, state legislative and U.S. congressional primaries are conducted in California.  (The top-two primary law does not affect elections for U.S. President, county central committees or local offices.)  Continue reading→

New voter data shows the Republican Party is dying in California

SACRAMENTO – Secretary of State Debra Bowen today published the latest statewide voter  registration report, which shows a  higher percentage of eligible Californians are registered to  vote since this time four years ago while fewer than ever are indicating a political party  preference.
The 60-day Report of Registration shows more than 17 million Californians are registered to  vote, 21.3 percent of whom chose no party preference – a new all-time high.  The previous  record high of unaffiliated voters was 21.2 percent, reported in the Secretary’s last Report of  Registration three months ago.
