2018 O.C. June Primary Election Voter Guide

The 2018 June Primary Election is coming up on June 5. We have examined all of the candidates in Orange County. If you support the CA Gas Tax you will not like this Voter Guide. We are generally not supporting candidates who want to raise our taxes or who support the High Speed Rail boondoggle. Here are our thoughts about the candidates for local offices here in Orange County:

  • Orange County Assessor – the incumbent is Claude Parrish. From what we hear he is a few sandwiches short of a picnic. Nevertheless the OC GOP has endorsed him. The Democrats have endorsed Nathaniel Fernandez Epstein, a lawyer who did not bother to buy a candidate’s statement. We like Richard B. Ramirez, a Deputy Assessor. He has our endorsement.

Sacramento – The Board of Equalization’s Open Data Portal, OPEN BOE, has received the Best Application Serving the Public award from the Center for Digital Government. BOE staff accepted the award during the California Technology Forum 2015 conference on August 13, 2015 in Sacramento.

This award is given for the design or improvement of an application that more effectively delivers services to the public. The application is judged for its productivity, performance, innovation, functionality, and collaboration. Continue reading→

Underground Economy Task Force Commended by State Assembly

Sacramento – Members of the Tax Recovery and Criminal Enforcement (TRaCE) task force received a State Assembly Resolution presented by Assemblymember Jim Cooper on August 6, 2015. The resolution commends TRaCE for being the first task force in the nation to combine state and federal law enforcement resources to combat tax fraud, piracy, counterfeiting, human trafficking and other crimes connected to the state’s estimated $8.5 billion dollar underground economy. BOE Chairman Announces: Board of Equalization Will Accepts Cash Payments From Medical Cannabis Business Operators

Los Angeles — Medical cannabis business owners may pay their tax liability to the California State Board of Equalization (BOE) in cash, simply by securing a seller’s permit from the Board of Equalization (BOE) and submitting a written request. BOE district offices will work with cannabis operators, whether they are legitimate medical cannabis distributors or underground sellers who wish to come out of the shadows, to establish a recurring schedule for cash payment. BOE Chairman Supports Targeting Medical Cannabis Tax Evasion

Illegal Medical Cannabis Businesses Rob Millions from California

Los Angeles – Board of Equalization (BOE) Chairman Jerome E. Horton announces his support for a “Cannabis Tax Enforcement ‘Eliot Ness’ Plan,” which is intended to educate, investigate, audit, arrest, and force cannabis sellers to pay their fair share of taxes. Horton is sponsoring new legislation authored by Assemblyman Mike Gipson, “The Cannabis Tax Amnesty Act,” which is an important part of this plan to encourage cannabis operators to comply with current laws and regulations.

“Because of the illegal aspect of cannabis sales and their potential to fund illegal activities in our communities, it is important that we distinguish between the responsible and irresponsible growers, distributors, vendors and consumers, and enforce the law to its fullest extent for those who choose to violate existing law,” said Chairman Horton. “The Cannabis Tax Amnesty Act is an opportunity for those not in compliance to bring themselves out of the shadows of the underground economy and in line with existing law.” Continue reading→
