Former O.C. Chair Fuentes has passed away

UPDATED: Former OC GOP Chairman Tom Fuentes has passed away, according to the OC Political Blog.

I worked with OC GOP Chairman Emeritus Tom Fuentes back in his heyday, when I was the inaugural OC GOP Hispanic Outreach Director. He was something back then. No one could run a meeting quite like Fuentes, who was famous for his “one clap.” He had asked me to help the Republican Party to reach out to Latinos – but by the time I quit the OC GOP Central Committee, in 2007, the Republican Party of Orange County had gone from reaching out to Latinos to bashing them. It was a sad turn of events.

Fuentes is now deathly ill with cancer, but he is still working on behalf of his beloved Republican Party. He summoned GOP Assembly candidates Allan Mansoor and Keith Carlson (Huntington Beach) to his bedside this week, at his home in Lake Forest, according to O.C. Register columnist Frank Mickadeit, and sure enough Fuentes did it again – convincing Carlson to pull out of the race for the 74th Assembly District. That paves the way for Mansoor to go head to head with moderate Republican Leslie Daigle, a popular Newport Beach Councilwoman. Continue reading→

Why is the OC GOP joining with OC Labor in attacking a Republican candidate?

Chris Nguyen, a Republican blogger at the OC Political blog (a blog that promotes the OC GOP machine, not to be confused with the blog you are currently reading) who is also a staffer at Assemblyman Chris Norby’s office, launched a direct attack today on Jose Moreno (pictured above), the only Republican candidate for the 69th Assembly District.

Nguyen accused Moreno of violating the Hatch Act, which prevents most federal employees from running for partisan offices. However, Moreno works for the County of Orange. Nguyen tried to make the case that Moreno’s agency is funded by the federal government, but Moreno’s agency also receives funding from the State of California, and from local sources as well.

Did OC GOP Chair Baugh compel Rush to enter the 74th A.D. primary?

I reported last week that, according to an OC GOP insider, it was none other than Scott Baugh, the Chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County, who, along with Supervisor Janet Nguyen, may have engineered Robert Hammond’s last minute exit from the 69th Assembly District primary – perhaps to help Democratic candidate Tom Daly, who is running against three Latino Democrats. Now an insider from the Democratic Party of Orange County (DPOC) has told me that his party chairman, Frank Barbaro, may have cut a deal with Baugh, to essentially trade Assembly Districts.

However, as Hammond was pulling out of the 69th, a last-minute Democratic challenger named Robert “Bob” Rush was filing to run in the 74th Assembly District. And get this, Rush was a Decline to State voter from at least 2002, through this year, according to the O.C. Registrar of Voters, before he suddenly became a Democrat this year. Something stinks. Did Nguyen and Baugh pull Hammond out of the race for the 69th A.D.?

An OC GOP insider gave me the scoop tonight on what really led to Republican Robert Hammond quitting the primary race for the 69th Assembly District – at the very last minute, last Friday, which was the filing deadline for that race. Hammond ended up pulling papers for the Orange County Board of Education’s Area One.

What my source told me was pretty much what I expected. Hammond did not come up with this scheme himself. Apparently Supervisor Janet Nguyen and OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh were the ones that advised him to leave the Republican Party of Orange County hanging, with no candidate in the 69th A.D. Deborah Pauly is willing to challenge labor, unlike sell-out Todd Spitzer
