At its December 2017 meeting, the Orange County Waste Management Commission elected Commissioner Donald R. Froelich to serve as Chairman for 2018. He was appointed to the Commission in 2011.

New Director Appointed for County Waste and Recycling Department
Santa Ana, Calif. – Tom Koutroulis has been appointed to the position of Director of Waste & Recycling (OCWR) for the County of Orange. Koutroulis was selected following a nationwide search and a competitive recruitment process.
Koutroulis has dedicated his professional life to the waste industry and has more than 25 years of experience in a variety of roles. He has spent the last 13 years of his career in leadership roles with Waste Management, Inc. and most recently served as the Senior Manager for Organics Project Development. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Irvine and a Master of Business Administration in Technology Management and Implementation from the University of Phoenix. Waste Management Commission Elects 2017 Leaders and Welcomes New Commissioner
At its meeting on Thursday, December 8, 2016 the Orange County Waste Management Commission elected Commissioner Joe J. Carchio to serve as chairman for 2017. He was appointed by the County of Orange Board of Supervisors in 2015 upon recommendation of Second District Supervisor and Vice Chair Michelle Steel. Carchio served as the Commission’s vice chair in 2016. He is a long-time resident and former mayor of Huntington Beach.
Commissioner and Cypress Council Member Rob Johnson was elected vice chair for 2017. He has served on the Commission since January 2015. As an Orange County City Selection Committee appointee, Johnson represents the cities of the Second District. Continue reading→
Trash Importation Approvals Will Assure Final Debt Repayment
Unanimous city approvals of agreements to allow continued acceptance of out-of-county trash through 2025 at local landfills will provide the revenue needed to fully repay the remaining creditors from the County’s 1994 bankruptcy. The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the pact on Tuesday.
The County retired one bankruptcy bond issue in June 2015, with the other to be repaid in the coming fiscal year. Combined principal and interest payments on both bonds total $1.585 billion. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Project Zero Waste, a service-learning program developed through a partnership between the County of Orange, OC Waste & Recycling, and the Orange County Department of Education’s (OCDE) Inside the Outdoors, has earned the California School Boards Association’s highly regarded Golden Bell Award. The award was announced at a ceremony on Saturday, December 5, 2015.
The Orange County Office of Education’s, Project Zero Waste program is an Inside the Outdoors service-learning environmental science program developed in partnership with the County of Orange—OC Waste & Recycling.
