Department of Education Reversal Seen as Victory for Parents

Following Letter from Republican Legislators, 15 years of Historical Data Restored to Website

SACRAMENTO: In a victory for public transparency and a parent’s right to know, the California Department of Education (DOE) has begun restoring 15 years of historical data that it had deleted from the most accessible part of its website.

The reversal from education officials came after it received significant pressure from Republicans in the California Senate and Assembly – that included a strongly worded letter sent to the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson late last week. SACRAMENTO – Mobilizing state resources to face another year of extreme dry conditions, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today joined Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León, Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, and Republican Leaders Senator Bob Huff and Assemblymember Kristin Olsen to announce legislation to help local communities cope with the ongoing, devastating drought. The $1 billion package will expedite bond funding to make the state more resilient to the disastrous effects of climate change and help ensure that all Californians have access to local water supplies.

“This unprecedented drought continues with no signs yet of letting up,” said Governor Brown. “The programs funded by the actions announced today will provide direct relief to workers and communities most impacted by these historic dry conditions.” Continue reading→

Assembly Republican Leader Kristin Olsen is hosting a Fundraising Reception for Assemblywoman Young Kim (R-Fullerton) on Tuesday, March 31st at 6:00 pm, in Newport Coast.

Olsen and Kim will update the attendees on what is going on in Sacramento, where the Republicans mounted a comeback last year, winning locally in the 65th Assembly District, which Kim represents, and also defeating the Democrats in the 34th State Senate District, which is now represented by State Senator Janet Nguyen. GOP and Democratic CA State Legislators flying to Maui to party with special interests

Two dozen state lawmakers are flying to luxury resorts in Hawaii for conferences subsidized and attended by interests that lobby the Legislature: oil companies, public employee unions, drug and tobacco firms, and others, according to the L.A. Times.

The special interest firms include: pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly; the nonprofit Independent Voter Project; Occidental Petroleum Corp., the Western State Petroleum Assn., Eli Lilly, the Altria tobacco firm, the California Cable and Telecommunications Assn., the state prison guards union and the California Distributors Assn., which represents distributors of tobacco and other products.

Legislators scheduled to attend this year’s event include Assembly Republican leader Kristin Olsen of Modesto, Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff of Diamond Bar, former Assembly Speaker John Pérez (D-Los Angeles), former Assembly Republican leader Connie Conway of Tulare, Assemblyman Bob Wieckoski (D-Fremont) and Assemblyman Manuel V.
