Two years after Costa Mesa voters prevented the city from adopting a “home rule” charter, the electorate appears to have repeated its message with a resounding “no” to Measure O, according to the OC Register.
The animosity towards Measure O might explain why longtime Costa Mesa Councilman Jim Righeimer is barely hanging on to his seat – by a margin of only 23 votes over liberal candidate Jay Humphrey. Unfortunately for Measure O, its opponents compared it to the mess in the City of Bell – and the proponents weren’t able to defend the measure.
Sure, the demographics in Costa Mesa are changing. Latinos now make up over 35% of the population. But Latinos don’t often vote – at least not here in Orange County.
