Newport Beach Councilman Peotter is now king of the OC GOP’s lunatic fringe

I was not surprised when I found out that Newport Beach Councilman Scott Peotter was in hot water for bashing gays. This is what I have come to expect from him.

Over a year ago, when the OC GOP met to decide on whether to endorse Republican Hugh Nguyen, who at the time was running for OC Clerk-Recorder, Peotter stood up and said that it is optional for the OC Clerk-Recorder’s office to perform marriage ceremonies. Peotter said the Clerk-Recorder can either perform all marriages (both same-sex and opposite-sex) or perform no marriages, as we reported. Continue reading→

9th Circuit Court of Appeals Affirms the Freedom to Marry

CRA Statement on US Supreme Court’s Prop 8 Decision

6/26/2013 – Today the US Supreme Court abdicated its responsibility, ruling that the appeal of California’s Proposition 8 was invalid because those appealing the overturning of Prop 8 did not have legal standing to do so.

Under the California Constitution, the California Attorney General is bound to defend ballot measures in Court, including those he/she disagrees with. Neither Jerry Brown nor Kamala Harris defended the voter-approved Proposition 8 and were rewarded for doing so by the US Supreme Court.

Attorney General Kamala Harris’ opponent lost by a fraction of a percentage point in 2010. This court decision would have been very different had Steve Cooley won. Let this be a lesson as to the importance of activism and joining CRA to defend the fabric of society.

In rendering this decision, the US Supreme Court has given a state’s attorney general veto power over voter-approved ballot measures. We are sure those Republicans that signed the anti-prop-8 amicus brief never realized the law of unintended consequences for their decision to do so.

Rest assured that the CRA will continue steadfastly promoting our 14 principles, supporting candidates that support our 14 principles and recruiting candidates for office that support our 14 principles.

“A coalition of gay and lesbian groups lost its bid in court Thursday to force the Little Saigon Tet Parade organizers to include the group in this Sunday’s event. Orange County Superior Court Judge Geoffrey T. Glass ruled against granting injunctive relief to the Partnership of Viet Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organizations,” according to the O.C. Register.

“For three years, LGBT activists have participated in the colorful gathering in Little Saigon, but this year — with the event shifting from city sponsorship to private hands — they have been rebuffed and quietly told to make a “sacrifice” and stay away, members said,” according to the L.A. O.C. gay rights organization’s PAC endorses Jordan Brandman

ECCO, one of the leading gay rights organizations in Orange County, announced today their Political Action Committee’s endorsements for the Nov. 6, 2012 General Election.

ECCO coordinated Orange County’s efforts to pass state laws that: prohibit discrimination against Gays and Lesbians; establish a domestic partner registry; and give students an added level of protection in school, according to their website. They also have been involved in the fight against Prop. 8, which made gay marriage illegal in California.
