The Republican Party of Orange County is officially in total disarray as they managed to lose every single House seat in the O.C. to the Democratic Party.
As you might imagine local Republicans are trying to figure out what happened. The Trumpers among them are in complete denial. They cannot possibly imagine that President Trump had anything to do with the blue sweep in Orange County.
The facts say otherwise. Remember that Trump did not win in Orange County during the last Presidential election. His Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, did. Her success in Orange County opened a lot of eyes on the left and their donors sent boatloads of money to this year’s Democratic challengers in Orange County.
The Republican Congressional candidates were totally outgunned by their blue counterparts. But that is not the entire story.
Presidents often lose the House of Representatives during Mid-Term Elections. That happened in fact to President Barack Obama. And President Trump points to how his party was able to hang on to the U.S. Senate as a measure of his success. But voter turnout was higher this year due in great part to animus towards Trump by young voters and women.
The OC GOP did not help itself when it came to its Congressional candidates either. Young Kim was only popular in the Korean community. Russ Lambert was a total Trumper who never stood a chance against Lou Correa. Diane Harkey was completely laughable – given what her husband did to a lot of innocent seniors (when he blew their retirement savings). Mimi Walters was a carpetbagger who spent very little time in her district – and her voting record was almost completely in line with Trump. U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher should have retired and let Scott Baugh run instead. Now the aging Rohrabacher is stuck at home with his much-younger creepy wife.
In ten years Millennials will make up three quarters of the consumers. In the meantime Republican voters are moving out of California in droves.
The future bodes ill for the GOP in Orange County and in California. In fact it is probably too late to save the OC GOP. Their power brokers after all are still fixated on gays and abortions.
If you think the current situation is bad hang on. The Democrats are going to go after Prop. 13 next.
