Marshall Tuck Announces 2018 Campaign for California State Superintendent of Public Instruction
Calls for “bold action to renew the promise of public education”
Los Angeles – Today, Marshall Tuck, an education advocate and proven leader of public schools, announced his candidacy for California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, stating:
“For too long, politicians have promised to improve our struggling public schools. But they’ve failed to make the big changes necessary. They’ve blocked new ideas and common-sense reforms. And now the Trump Administration is trying to undermine the very promise of public schools.
This is more than a policy failure – it’s a moral stain on the State of California. And in a globally competitive economy, it’s a clear threat to our future.
It is time to stop settling for mediocrity, and take bold action to renew the promise of public education for children across California.”
Tuck has spent most of his career working to change lives through better schools.
As head of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, he led a system of 17 urban public schools, serving over 15,000 students – and worked with parents and educators to raise graduation rates by 60% and improve student achievement at a faster rate than any other school system in California with more than 10,000 students. .
As President of Green Dot Public Schools, he helped open 10 new public charter schools in some of LA’s poorest neighborhoods. Every one of them outperformed their peers, and 7 of them have been ranked among the top high schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report.
Since 2015, Tuck has served as an Educator-in-Residence at the New Teacher Center (NTC), a nonprofit organization working with school districts to help develop and retain effective teachers and principals.
Tuck ran an underdog campaign for State Superintendent in 2014, garnering 2.9 million votes. Winning 48% of the vote, he came closer to defeating the incumbent than any other statewide challenger.
The son of a teacher, Tuck was born in Burlingame, CA and attended parochial elementary school and public middle and high schools. A graduate of UCLA and Harvard Business School, Tuck lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Mae, and their son Mason.
