Santa Ana, CA – The Mexican American Bar Association PAC (MABA PAC), an influential Latino organization in California comprised of attorneys, civic leaders and business people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, has endorsed Bao Nguyen for California’s 46th Congressional District.
Felipe Plascencia, the President of MABA PAC offered the following endorsement:
Bao Nguyen is the only immigrant in the race and he understands the challenges that immigrant families face on a personal level. As mayor of Garden Grove, he has shown a fierce commitment to ensuring that students have the tools they need to succeed in school and pursue higher education. We are confident that Bao will continue to represent the needs of the Latino community and ensure that the government’s priorities reflect our needs.
MABA PAC joins a long list of prominent Latinos in law in their support for Mayor Nguyen’s bid for Congress, including Lyo Figueroa, President of the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association* (OCHBA), Sergio C. Garcia, California’s first undocumented immigrant lawyer, Eric Dominguez, a leading immigration lawyer and President-Elect of the OCHBA,* and past President of the OCHBA Diana Lopez.
Bao Nguyen, who was brought to the United States as a baby when his parents escaped Vietnam, had the following response:
I am honored to have earned the support of MABA PAC. Latinos contribute so much to our country. Our government is long overdue in changing its policies to help hardworking immigrant families succeed, not tear them apart. In Congress, I will fight for policies that address the needs of our diverse community to help improve the economic situation of struggling families, help kids succeed in school and have affordable opportunities for higher education, and fix the broken immigration system in this country.
After serving as a local community organizer, and then on Garden Grove’s school board, Bao Nguyen was elected Mayor of Garden Grove in 2014. As Mayor, he has supported immigration reform, signing the amicus brief on United States v. Texas in support of DACA and DAPA. Upon his swearing-in, he became the first directly-elected Vietnamese American Democratic Mayor in the United States. When elected, he will be the first openly gay immigrant to serve in Congress.
