The Fountain Valley City Council passed an ordinance this week banning all cannabis activity and cultivation, according to the O.C. Register.
Only one Fountain Valley City Council Member, Mark McCurdy, voted against the ordinance – and he did so with good reason. As McCurdy pointed out there are cancer patients and others who could benefit from medical marijuana – which should be legal in California because voters passed Prop. 215.
Fountain Valley is not alone in taking action against the will of the voters. Laguna Woods also allows medical marijuana and the Cities of Huntington Beach, Laguna Hills, Newport Beach and Rancho Santa Margarita have bans on medical marijuana dispensaries. The City of Anaheim has also shut down 163 medical marijuana dispensaries.
You really have to hand it to the Fountain Valley City Council. They rob their residents by overpaying their trash vendor, while taking massive campaign contributions from the trash vendor, and now they have acted to hurt their residents who need medical marijuana.
You have to wonder if the Fountain Valley City Council members are even aware of their own city’s demographics. 17.6% of Fountain Valley’s residents are over 65 years of age – compared to only 11.4% of California’s residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Fountain Valley Mayor Steve Nagel is a senior himself as are City Council Members Cheryl Brothers, and John Collins. Councilman Michael Vo is no spring chicken either! Perhaps these lame politicians will rethink their stance on medical marijuana when one of them gets cancer and has to use it.
You also have to wonder how much money the Fountain Valley City Council is turning their back on by not legalizing and taxing the medical marijuana dispensaries. The State of Colorado collected almost $70 million in marijuana taxes last year, nearly double the $42 million they collected from alcohol taxes, according to Time Magazine.
Yes the Fountain Valley City Council voted 4-1 to ban all medical cannabis (marijuana) activity at their Tuesday, November 17, 2015 City Council meeting. The one nay vote was from Councilman Mark McCurdy who took a stand for the benefits of medical cannabis for the sick and depriving these sick people would be an unacceptable thing for the City to do. In order to provide some method for these people to continue to receive and take cannabis for their suffering the City Council adopted a position that stated; “anyone needing medical marijuana can have a caregiver bring it in from outside of the City”. The City of Fountain Valley would consider this act as being legal in Fountain Valley. HOWEVER, I QUESTION THE LEGALLY OF A CAREGIVER TRANSPORTING THE MEDICAL CANNABIS (MARIJUANA) ON ROADS AND THRU CITIES THAT MAY HAVE ANTI-CANNABIS (MARIJUANA) ORDINANCES. I THINK THE CITY OF FOUNTAIN VALLEY NEEDS TO RETHINK THEIR DECISION.
It would be a huge mistake if these people who need cannabis, can no longer receive it legally to offset their suffering. How about you Fountain Valley City Council members, what will you do if you or your family members get a sickness and will need medical cannabis to help relive their suffering?
There are so many young and elderly who are sick and are taking prescription medications with the resulting side effects such as nausea, seizures, and emotional problems. Some are so sick that the prescription drugs they are taking don’t help them. They can’t eat, are in lots of pain, they can’t sleep, and are suffering from pain. The medicines they take to help their pain makes them sicker due to the side effects from their prescriptions pain medication they take to limit their pain.
