SENATOR BOXER ANNOUNCES HER OPPOSITION TO LEGISLATION THAT WOULD PUNISH SANCTUARY CITIES
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today announced that she will oppose legislation that would cut off sanctuary jurisdictions from receiving crucial federal funds.
“Law enforcement officials have told me that sanctuary city policies are critical to keeping all of us safe by promoting trust and cooperation between police and immigrant communities,” Senator Boxer said. “That is why I am against this misguided Republican bill.”
Senator Boxer cited warnings from law enforcement organizations across the country that ending sanctuary cities would lead to an increase in crime as an important factor in her opposition to the bill.
Boxer pointed out that Richard Biehl, Police Chief in Dayton, Ohio said, “Sanctuary policies and practices are not designed to harbor criminals. On the contrary, they exist to support community policing, ensuring that the community at large – including immigrant communities – trusts state and local law enforcement and feels secure in reporting criminal conduct.”
Rob Davis, former Police Chief in San Jose, California said, “We have been fortunate enough to solve some terrible cases because of the willingness of illegal immigrants to step forward, and if they saw us as part of the immigration services, I just don’t know if they’d do that anymore.”
Ron Teachman, Police Chief in South Bend, Indiana said: “Many of us in law enforcement are concerned that seemingly random deportation … of our community members destabilizes our community and distances us from the people we’re trying to serve. undermines our efforts to build collaborative policing and trust.”
Jose L. Lopez, Sr., Police Chief in Durham, North Carolina said: “We work hard to gain immigrants’ trust and afford them the same protection that this country offers to all who are here. Let’s work on a broad immigration reform that will fix the system.”
Lupe Valdez, Dallas County Sheriff, Dallas, Texas said: “A lot of undocumented individuals came from areas where they can’t trust the police. The uniform has pushed them into the shadows. Good law enforcement cannot be carried out this way.”
This bill is opposed by law enforcement, immigrant rights organizations, faith groups, domestic violence groups, labor unions, housing and community development organizations, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities – among many others.
