Assemblywoman Young Kim Honors Ed Royce, Sr. as the 65th Assembly District Veteran of the Year
FULLERTON – Assemblywoman Young Kim (R-Fullerton) is pleased to announce that Ed Royce, Sr., resident of the City of Stanton, has been named the 2015 Veteran of the Year for the 65th Assembly District.
“Having known Ed Royce, Sr. for over two decades, I had the opportunity to hear firsthand of his war experiences and what his service has meant to our nation,” said Assemblywoman Young Kim. “I am proud to represent the city of Stanton where Mr. Royce resides and I am honored to recognize him as my first Veteran of the Year. His life of service to both our country and community is an inspiration, and he truly embodies the qualities of what it means to be a veteran: duty, service and sacrifice.”
Ed Royce, Sr. is a Veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. His overseas tour of duty included Ireland, England, France, Germany, and Austria. During the war, Mr. Royce served as a Forward Observer for the 3rd Field Artillery Observation Battalion, as part of General Patton’s Third Army, directing fire against enemy tanks and positions.
Using a camera borrowed from his brother, Mr. Royce was able to take pictures of his war experiences, including the liberation at the concentration camp Dachau. After the war, he continued to share his testimony and photos as a reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust, preserving the memory and legacy of the precious lives that were lost.
After serving his country Mr. Royce served the Stanton community from September 13, 2005 through January 24, 2012, as a Council Member and served as Mayor from December 8, 2009 to December 14, 2010. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Municipal Water District of Orange County for twelve years and the Municipal Water District of Southern California for one year.
Assemblywoman Young Kim recognized Ed Royce Sr. with a special tribute at her First Annual 65th Assembly District Independence Day celebration and concert last week in front of community leaders and local elected officials.
“Recognizing a Veteran of the Year reminds us of the valiant sacrifice our veterans gave to protect our nation, defend our liberty and leave behind a safer and freer world,” said Assemblywoman Kim. “I will make it my priority to ensure that all veterans receive the benefits they deserve in tribute to the many years of bravery serving in our Armed Forces by continuing to support legislation that improves their access to health care, housing, higher education, job training and employment opportunities.”
