Statement by Assemblywoman Kim on City of Buena Park Decision to Implement District Elections
SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Young Kim, R-Fullerton, today issued the following statement in response to Wednesday’s announcement by the City of Buena Park that it would implement district-based elections starting in 2016.
“I am very pleased to see Buena Park voluntarily move toward a district-based election system. This will ensure that every community in Buena Park will have the opportunity to participate in the drawing of new district lines. Most importantly, every voter in Buena Park will have the chance to make their voices heard in electing the representative of their choice.
“Switching to a district elections system will ensure that a city government that is truly representative of the community is elected. Most importantly, it will prevent Buena Park from having to defend itself from a potential lawsuit by an outside group. This will preserve funds for vital city services that would have otherwise gone for expensive legal fees.
“Decisions about representation are best made by the members of the community, not by a judge or an outside group. I commend the leaders of the city of Buena Park for taking this important step to increase the representation of minority communities in city government.”
Kim represents the 65th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Buena Park, Cypress, Fullerton, La Palma, Stanton, and West Anaheim.
