BAO NGUYEN TAKES LEAD IN RACE FOR GARDEN GROVE MAYOR
Garden Grove, California – Garden Grove Unified School District Trustee Bao Nguyen took the lead in the race for Garden Grove Mayor today. Nguyen, who trailed Mayor Bruce Broadwater by 357 votes on election night, has steadily gained ground as late absentee and provisional ballots have been tabulated. As of today’s update, Nguyen leads Broadwater by 7 votes.
In response to the results, Nguyen released the following statement:
“I’m incredibly excited to move into first place and encouraged by the trend in the most recent updates from the Orange County Registrar of Voters. Although a number of votes still need to be counted, I feel optimistic about our chances of winning this election and delivering the change that Garden Grove residents deserve.”
Despite being significantly outspent by the longtime Mayor and Councilmember, Nguyen’s upstart campaign earned powerful endorsements from the Orange County Register, the Garden Grove Firefighters Association, and the Democratic Party of Orange County. If victorious, Nguyen will become the second Vietnamese American elected mayor of a US city and the first Vietnamese American elected mayor of a US city with over 100,000 residents. At 34, it is believed that he will also become the youngest mayor in Garden Grove history.
Bao Nguyen currently represents over 90% of Garden Grove as a Trustee on the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education. On the School Board, Nguyen successfully led the adoption and implementation of the California State Seal of Biliteracy, an award that recognizes high school graduates for their high academic achievement in world languages in addition to English. In addition to his work on the School Board, Nguyen currently serves on the Orange County Fair Board of Directors and is a member of the Commission on Ecumenical and Inter-religious Affairs of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange.
Born in a refugee camp, Nguyen arrived to the United States at three months of age. He holds a bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of California at Irvine, a master’s in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies from Naropa University, and is trilingual in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Lets hope Bao maintains his lead!!! go bao!!
He didn’t run as a Liberal candidate nor did he run as a openly gay candidate. Not that this should matter to myself but I’m sure if voter knew that he was a Liberal(thought i was going to say something else) candidate he would not be doing so well.
