TNT Action Alert: THE TALE OF THE CALIFORNIA FIREWORKS TAX
“If it moves, tax it.”
A famous politician once used that sentence to describe how legislators look for sources of income – and it is beginning to look like he was right. With this year’s Fourth of July celebrations barely behind us, legislators will soon be renewing their plans to add a tax to Safe and Sane fireworks, which are already subject to sales taxes, license fees and local surcharges.
Some taxes, of course, make sense. But in this case the politicians are planning to jack up the price of Safe and Sane fireworks so California will have more money to dispose of illegal fireworks.
That’s right – the Legislature wants to make the people who distribute, sell and buy LEGAL fireworks responsible for the cost of getting rid of ILLEGAL ones.
We don’t think that’s right – and we’re willing to bet you won’t think so either when you learn more about the Fireworks Tax. So help us find out if we are right:
Please take a few minutes to watch a video by Senator Minority Leader Bob Huff on YouTube that does a very good job of explaining the situation:
If you want more details, look at this document that explains how the tax will impact the nonprofits that sell Safe and Sane fireworks in your community.
Then let Senator Huff know how much you appreciate his and others’ efforts to stop this unfair Fireworks Tax. Click Respond Now to send him an automated thank you note.
Below is the email that will be sent when you use the Respond Now form:
Dear Senator Huff,
As a California consumer and responsible user of Safe and Sane fireworks, I want to let you know how appreciative I am of your efforts to defeat the Fireworks Tax.
I am spreading the word among my family and friends about how unfair this tax is – putting the cost of dealing with ILLEGAL fireworks on those of us who buy LEGAL ones just doesn’t make sense. Via social media, I will be sure to let my friends know of your actions and those of other legislators who are on our side.
Thank you. Please keep up the good work!
We will keep you posted in the coming months as the fight continues to eradicate illegal fireworks without taxing the very people – all of you – who are making a Safe and Sane Fourth of July possible!
Thanks in advance for your support.

Governor Jerry Brown proposed a law that would allow the state to pack up all the confiscated fireworks and re sell them for cost to transport them back to the resellers and the bill was shut down. This would have been a win for California and a win for the retailers.
Here is another out of the box idea. How about the state setting up a legal fireworks park and selling those fireworks to be shot at a safe supervised location far enough away from the city as not to bother people and actually make money off the confiscated fireworks. I can assure you they would be pulling in a hell of allot more than 10 cents a pound.
