On his website and in emails today, AD74 Candidate Keith Curry seems to be bending perception a bit by trying to make it look like he’s been endorsed by the Daily Pilot, an LA Times local paper that focuses on Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.
In a “Commentary”, two former NB Mayors that fellow Council Member and rotating Mayor Curry is their choice for the 74th Assembly District. Like many Orange County cities, Newport rotates their mayoral title annually amongst the sitting council members. The position is largely ceremonial, holds the council meeting gavel, but has no additional voting power or political influence in city matters.
The Pilot has made no endorsement in the race.
We also noted above that former Mayors Henn and O’Neil failed to mention Curry’s support for building a $135 million city hall in Newport that became locally known as the “Taj Majal”.
Curry is in a tight race with AD72 District Director Emanuel Patrascu.
