Bills Pass Committee to Rein in Government Spending Through Increased Fiscal Responsibility, Accountability and Transparency
Bills will track and make public hidden government accounts and Judicial Branch contract spending
SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Travis Allen’s (R-Huntington Beach) Assembly Bill 1583 and AB 1773, which will both serve to increase fiscal responsibility and provide additional transparency in government spending passed unanimously out of the Committee on Accountability and Administrative Review.
“The Legislature should implement sound fiscal practices to ensure that our tax dollars are allocated in accordance with the best interests of voters. These legislative initiatives ensure that there is legislative oversight to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent where they are most needed, and are designed to get the taxpayers of California the highest rate of return,” said Assemblyman Allen.
AB 1583 and AB 1773 follow recommendations made by the State Auditor in reports completed in 2013 to ensure that government spending is no longer hidden from the public.
The bills as passed by the Committee:
AB 1583
AB 1583 would require the Controller to prepare and submit to the Legislature and the Department of Finance an annual report on all of the bank spending accounts maintained by every state agency outside the Treasury.
AB 1773
AB 1773 would require the Judicial Council to include additional information in its semiannual reports to the Legislature on Judicial Branch contracting, and requires that these reports be provided in a publicly accessible electronic format.
“Transparency and accountability on the use of taxpayer’s hard earned money is of the utmost importance,” said Assemblyman Travis Allen. “Having a background as a financial advisor, I am committed to bringing fiscal responsibility and a more focused oversight to Sacramento’s unchecked spending.”
