One of Orange County’s biggest hacks, PR flack Matt Cunningham, went bananas today on the OC Political blog – which for all effects and purposes is a rehash of Cunningham’s old Red County blog, which thankfully died a couple years ago. What got Cunningham riled up? Well he says that the Lincoln Club of Orange County endorsed Robert Ming for the 5th Supervisorial District without first meeting with one of his opponents, Mission Viejo Councilman Frank Ury.
Fair enough – the Lincoln Club is a private organization so if they don’t want to talk to Ury, oh well. But Cunningham then proceeds to brag about how conservative he and Ury are, and have been for twenty years. That is when I have to call “B.S.”
Wwhere do we start in summarizing the awful Ury? Here is a rundown of his “highlights:”
- A Superior Court judge ruled in April, 2010, that Councilman Frank Ury provided false or misleading information in an official ballot statement. Ury had been designated by the City Council in February to submit a written statement opposing Measure D, known as the Right To Vote Amendment. The Judge struck a statement by Ury which would have told voters that state law prevented housing from ever being constructed on the Casta del Sol Golf Course. Schlicht argued no such state law existed, and alleged a portion of the golf course was not in a flood control channel nor in the dam inundation area below Lake Mission Viejo. Judge Rodriguez also found the Councilman false or misleading when Ury stated businesses wishing to expand would have to go to a full vote of the people at their own expense under Measure D. Strike three against Ury came when the court found it false or misleading to say taxpayers would be “forced” to pay for any subsidized housing approved for Mission Viejo. (Mission Viejo Patch)
- In 2012, Ury received $5,000 from UDR, a realtor that has been approved to demolish the former K-Mart building in order to build 320 apartments on Los Alisos. (Mission Viejo Patch)
- Ury was endorsed by the hacks at the Orange County Business Council in 2012. They gushed about him thusly: He serves as the City’s representative for the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA), the Transportation Corridor System, the League of California Cities (LOCC), and the Association of California Cities-Orange County (ACC-OC). Mayor Ury is also the alternate for the Orange County Council of Governments (OCCOG) and for the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). Those are all even more reasons to oppose Ury!
- You can also read all about Ury’s past transgressions over at the Orange Juice blog, where our friend Larry Gilbert spent several years writing about Ury and Mission Viejo politics. Example – Ury lied on his 2008 campaign statement. Ury also promoted Wi-Fi service at the Mission Viejo City Hall but did not tell anyone that his firm provides Wi-Fi services. That is called a conflict of interest.
As for Cunningham, you can learn all you need to know about him by reading the old posts at the award-winning Friends for Fullerton’s Future blog. He really is a piece of work. He and Ury may well have been conservatives once upon a time, but they are now statists who live to pilfer public money for their own well-being. Cunningham in particular was outed for taking thousands of dollars from the California First Five Commission, in Orange County, for inane tasks such as reading blogs. He also got in hot water a few years back when he revealed the names of a number of victims of sexual molestation, by Catholic priests, while Cunningham was defending the abysmal Monsignor John Urell, who covered up many of these molestations. Today Cunningham is shilling for his old pal Curt Pringle, with an awful Anaheim Blog. These guys are all about handing out millions to hotel developers who ought to be using their own money to build hotels. And they advocated for a transit station that Anaheim didn’t need, burning up even more piles of money, from Measure M (that is our sales tax money being misused)!
I use Cunningham today as a rule of thumb. If he endorses someone that means we should run the other way! So if he thinks Ury is the cat’s meow that means he is the last guy on earth we should vote for. But then we already knew that!
So what do real O.C. Republicans think about Cunningham’s tearful rampage for Ury?
Here is what Irvine Finance Commissioner Allan Bartlett had to say about this “Congrats to the Lincoln Club on their endorsement of Robert Ming. He will be a good Supervisor IMO. As far as Matt’s sour grapes posting, he’s just billing time to put up crap like this. The only thing that has been been “diminished” recently Matt, is your credibility. How much are you getting paid to post this? I thought you were supposed to disclose that here?”
And here is what my old friend Larry Gilbert had to say about this “Matt. Frank Ury and the “grass roots” activists in Mission Viejo have a long history going all the way back to his one term on the SVUSD. We have seen him in action on our city council and, based on his track record and arrogance in that post, will not be supporting his bid for the BOS seat. Several of us assisted him in his initial victory in 2004 and have watched him ever since. The detailed list is long and will not be shared here. Last Nov his contribution to a PAC opposing all three OCGOP endorsements (in the 2010 election cycle ) was exposed during an Endorsing Meeting of the OC Republican Party. Chairman Baugh was not pleased in seeing the documentation especially as Frank was seeking his own endorsement which was not granted last fall.”
