President Obama was comfortable with conservative Republicans threatening to prevent the implementation of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, (Obamacare) by refusing to raise the debt ceiling in September and shutting down the federal government. But with recent public opinion polls showing a 41% fall in satisfaction with the Democratic Party since Election Day in 2012, conservative Democrats Senators facing reelection in 2014 are quietly beginning to revolt against the Obamacare start-up in October. Facing the potential collapse of his greatest legislative triumph, the President appears willing to declare war on Syria to save Obamacare.
President Obama lost by 2% to Mitt Romney in voters over 30 year old, but won reelection with a 25 percentage point advantage among 18-29 year old Millennial voters. But since November 2012, Obama’s job approval has fallen by 9 points. The biggest driver of this drop is the 15 point plunge in job approval from Millennials. This crumbling support appears tied to the unique worsening of the full-time job market for this age group. National averages for the rate of unemployment over the last year improved from 8.2% to 7.4%; but the number of full-time employed Millennials plummeted by 7.2%. This crushing loss of youth income and benefits appears to be directly attributable to the employer efforts to avoid the heavy costs of Obamacare.
Just before the five-week summer recess on August 2nd, House Republicans voted to repeal Obamacare for the 40th time. The day before, Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tried to bring two bills to the floor of the Senate to repeal the law, but Majority Leader Harry Reid’s spokesman Adam Jentleson stated: “We will not bring it up. Republicans can try and force a vote on it if they want to keep tilting at windmills, but it’s just a further waste of everyone’s time and energy.”
Despite the $684 million funded advertising budget in Obamacare to convince Americans about the “benefits of the law”, three-quarters of voters still know very little about the details of Obamacare. After a number of large companies intended to cut work to part-time and dumped paid healthcare in July to limit the law’s costs, the Administration deferred the Obamacare “Employer Mandate” for one year. This delay means that millions of workers will now be losing their full-time work and company insurance next year in the run-up to the November 2014 election.
Democrats hold a 55 to 45 seat majority in the Senate, but Republicans have a strong path in 2014 to winning six seats and taking control. During the last mid-term elections in 2010, the GOP picked up a net six senate seats. Republican targets in 2014 are Mark Pryor in Arkansas,Mary Landrieu in Louisiana, Kay Hagan in North Dakota Tim Johnson in South Dakota Mark Begich in Alaska and Mark Warner in Virginia. These conservative Democrats all benefited at the polls from Obama’s 2008 landslide when they last ran for election. But they will suffer badly in 2014 if the President is unpopular.
Back in June, I predicted the Obama Administration would be forced to put off attempting to “Wag the Syrian Dog”, due to the humiliation over revelations by Edward Snowden the U.S. government was spying on Americans and our own allies. Just like President Clinton used the “Wag the Dog” strategy in Yugoslavia to distract public attention away from his Lewinsky scandal, I believe the Administration for the last month has been cranking up a military adventure in Syria to silence Obamacare critics.
Syria has a population of 22,457,336, 16% are Christian, 12% Alawite Muslims, 9% Kurds, 4%Druze and 2% Jewish. The rest is Sunni Muslim Arabs. If there was a free election, most observers believe that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would be reelected. strong minority support explains why government forces rallied back against the Muslim Brotherhood and al Qaeda rebels this year and were on the verge of winning the revolution, prior to the August 21st supposed government chemical weapons attack.
But prior to the chemical weapons attack, the Obama Administration was already moving assets toward Syria. On June 3rd Patriot missile batteries and F-16 were deployed to Jordan; July 25th we observed the U.S. Harry S. Truman Attack Carrier Task Force crossing the Atlantic and headed to the coast of Syria to join Attack Carrier Task Force from the 5th Fleet already in the region. According to France’s second largest newspaper Le Figaro on August 17th, 300 CIA trained Jordanian, Israeli and American commandos crossed the Jordanian border headed towards the region of Daraa in southern Syria. On the 19th another group also crossed the border. Experts on the region are predicting Washington has already prepared to establish a buffer zone or no-fly zone in the south of Syria.
According to Stratfor Global Intelligence Reports; “Four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers — and probably a nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine — are already within Tomahawk cruise missile range of Syrian targets.” Strategic bombers based in the continental United States, B-1 bombers from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar would attack Syrian air defenses; while B-2 bombers drop bunker-busting bombs with “minimal risk.”
The Reuters/Ipsos poll taken between August 19 to 23rd, the same week as the controversial reports suggesting Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons against his own people, demonstrate only 9 percent of American’s favored Syrian military intervention. Unfortunately for the Syrian people, the Administration needs to “Wag the Dog” to save Obamacare and they are the most convenient target.
