With Michelle Steel termed out from her State Board of Equalization seat and running for Orange County Board of Supervisors, there are two major contenders running for Steel’s BOE seat: State Senator Mark Wyland (R-Escondido) and State Assemblywoman Diane Harkey (R-Dana Point). Wyland and Harkey represent overlapping districts, with Harkey representing South Orange County in the Assembly and Wyland representing both South Orange County and North San Diego County in the Senate, according to the OC Political blog.
Apparently State Senators Lou Correa and Tom Harman, who both have opened campaign accounts for the BOE, District 4, aren’t running, but I included them in our poll as the poll would otherwise be rather boring. I cannot imagine why in the world anyone would, at this point, vote for Harkey for ANY office, much less the BOE, not after what her husband is alleged to have done to quite a few Orange County investors.
I would imagine that several Democrats would jump into this race if Correa does in fact run for something else, or stand pat perhaps and run for the OC Supervisorial seat held by Janet Nguyen, if she prevails in her campaign for Correa’s State Senate seat, in 2014.
The massive BOE-4 seat comprises 25% of the state’s population, consisting of all of Orange County, San Diego County, Riverside County, Imperial County, and portions of San Bernardino County. (In redistricting, the seat was renumbered, as it was previously BOE-3, and consisted of all the territory described above plus more portions of San Bernardino County and small slivers of Los Angeles County.), according to the OC Political blog.
While there are quite a few Republicans in BOE-4, there are a lot of Democrats too and by no means does Harkey or Wyland have this seat in the bag.
Chris Nguyen, at the OC Political blog, thinks that Harkey has the edge because she has spent a lot of money on GOP slate mailers in 2014. I disagree. Slate mailers are today a giant waste of money. Most go right in the trash. Voters today are looking online for information. The BOE-4 candidate with the best social media campaign will have a vast advantage over the tarnished Harkey.
What say you?
