State Senator Lou Correa will term out in the 34th State Senate District in 2014. The Republican who replaced him on the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Janet Nguyen, is all in for this race as is Jose Solorio, the former state legislator who is now a College Trustee in Santa Ana.
Jim Silva, a former Republican State Assemblyman in the Huntington Beach area is also running for the 34th. I am not aware of any other candidates although I hear that labor consultant Julio Perez, who lost in the 2012 Primary Election when he ran for the 69th Assembly District, could jump into this race just to cause trouble for Solorio.
Democrats have a 2 percentage point advantage in the district’s voter registration, making the district a tossup. Voters there favored Barack Obama over Mitt Romney for president, but also chose Republican Meg Whitman over Jerry Brown for governor, according to the O.C. Register.
Nguyen was a prominent supporter of the failed Whitman campaign. She is reportedly under investigation by the FPPC and the FBI due to campaign finance issues that developed when she brutally took over the CalOptima Board, then packed it with medical industry heavies, and they immediately began donating to her campaign warchest.
You have to figure that Solorio, particularly if he is the only Democrat in the race, will advance to the General Election. Silva seems to be at a disadvantage as compared to Nguyen as he is not well known in Central Orange County. Then again most of her press is bad news.
I should note that local Santa Ana resident Stanley Fiala says he is running, presumably as a Libertarian. He can be pretty funny in the debates – as he has proven when running, several times, for Santa Ana Mayor.
So who do you back in this race?

I vote for that maniac Fiala! He can’t be any worse than Solorio or Janet!
Silva is a former Assemblymember*
Thanks! Fixed the poll and will edit the post.
