Our recent poll of the possible candidates to replace U.S. Representative John Campbell in the 45th Congressional District, in 2014, revealed three top candidates – U.S. Rep. Ed Royce, who may swap districts; State Senator Mimi Walters and Irvine Mayor Steven Choi.
Choi was elected Mayor of Irvine in 2012. He was elected to the Irvine City Council for the first time in 2004 and re-elected to a second term in 2008. Previously, he was elected as a Trustee of the Irvine Unified School District in 1998 and re-elected in 2002.
Of all the Republican candidates Choi is the most likely to draw crossover votes from Independent voters and Democrats, which is very important in our Open Primary Election System.
How does Choi compare to Royce and Walters? Royce is popular but really has never accomplished anything and is somewhat of a chicken hawk. Royce also has supported a multitude of RINO candidates in Norther Orange County.
Walters recently voted for a $2.3 billion tax extension, according to John Hrabe’s blog. That is a huge no bueno!
But if Choi wins the Congressional seat what will happen to the City of Irvine? The Republicans finally took over control of their City Council last November. Democrats Beth Krom and Larry Agran would love to take back control!
Then again, Choi could make history as Orange County’s first Korean American to get to Congress! Tough choice to make…
So should Choi run for Congress? Please vote in our poll today:

I think Choi can win. He should start now.
No, he’s not good for Irvine and he definitely won’t be good for the 45th Congressional district.
