An Open Letter to State Controller Chiang rejecting Legislative Pay Raises
June 20, 2013
State Controller John Chiang
P.O. Box 942850
P.O. Box 942850
Dear Controller Chiang,
It has come to my attention that the Governor-appointed Commission over Legislative pay has voted to approve a 5% pay raise for the Governor and all lawmakers.
This is not only the wrong move at the wrong time, this is just plain wrong. It is criminal to raise taxes on hard working Californians just to raise the pay of the politicians in Sacramento.
There are millions of Californians still out of work because of the actions of this Legislature, and there are hundreds of thousands of state employees who have taken deep pay cuts to help balance the budget.
If we are not restoring their pay, we should not be restoring the politicians’. It is an insult to all Californians to line the pockets of the politicians’ while cutting aid to those truly in need.
I have urged my colleagues on the floor of the Assembly to reject this pay increase. As for me, I refuse to accept an unwarranted pay increase on the backs of hard-working taxpayers.
Please maintain my pay at the pre-existing level.
Thank you for your attention on this matter.
Assemblyman, 33rd District
We’ll be curious to see who else in the Legislature might join Donnelly in showing some level of responsibility California’s estimated TOTAL DEBT at the state and local level is $1.1 TRILLION. Spending need to stop somewhere.
