Jordan Brandman has won a seat on the Anaheim City Council and now his colleagues on the Anaheim Union High School District’s Board of Education must decide whether to appoint someone to replace him or to hold a Special Election to fill his seat.
The last time the AUHSD School Board replaced a Trustee was this year when Trustee Jan Harp-Domene passed away suddenly earlier this year. The Board replaced her with Annmarie Randle-Trejo who went on to win a permanent place on the AUHSD School Board in this year’s general election, according to Smart Voter.
Another past Trustee, Denise Mansfield-Ranking, passed away in 2007. She was replaced when the AUHSD School Board appointed former Trustee Harald Martin to replace her. But that was an epic backfire as the community rebelled against the appointment of the divisive overtly anti-Latino Martin. The seat was then made available in a 2008 Special Election that was won by Brandman, according to Smart Voter.
I felt back in 2007, that Brandman should have been appointed to replace Mansfield-Ranking as he was the runner-up in the 2006 AUHSD School Board election, according to Smart Voter. Instead the Board went with Martin – which was a total bust.
This year the runner-up in the General Election was former AUHSD Trustee Thomas “Hoagy” Holguin, according to Smart Voter. He lost by just 5% of the vote. There are two year’s left in Brandman’s term which means Holguin would have to run again in 2014.
I personally believe that the AUHSD Trustees should appoint Holguin to replace Brandman, as this year’s runner-up, rather than appoint someone else or hold an expensive and unwarranted Special Election. The voters have already spoken! And Holguin is a Latino – in a city that has been thirsty for more Latino leadership. Holguin is also a business owner – that is valuable experience to have on the AUHSD School Board.
