Stop the presses! Fullerton Mayor Sharon Quirk-Silva was losing when I went to bed last night but this morning the voting results say she won, barely, beating Chris Norby, in the 65th Assembly District. Amazing!
It will be awhile before we can parse the numbers but you have to figure that more voters showed up in the general than in the primary election – and could it be that the Latino voters in the 65th actually voted? It sure looks like it.
Other key results for liberal O.C. Democrats:
- John Leos ended up in a distant third place in Anaheim’s Council races – another blow to the OCEA, which blew a load on this race. The winners were Republican Lucille Kring and corporate Democrat Jordan Brandman. The latter was the recipient of thousands of PAC dollars courtesy of Disney and the SOAR PAC.
- In Irvine Beth Krom got the most votes in the Council race, but the Republicans Christina Shea and Lynn Schott also won. And mayoral candidate Larry Agran lost to Steven Choi! And more bad news for the Irvine Democrats – Sukhee Kang lost very badly to U.S. Rep. John Campbell. The Republicans now run Irvine. I can’t imagine that is sitting well with the guys at my former blog…
- In Brea uber Tea Party Republican Steve Vargas lost in the Council elections. And moderate Christine Marick ended up in first place! But sadly Measure T passed, although the equally odious Measure U lost.
- How about that? Moderate Republican Sandy Genis was the top vote getter in the Costa Mesa Council race. Conservative Republicans Steve Mensinger and Gary Monahan also won. But the city charter amendment, Measure V, lost in a landslide. I can’t imagine Jim Righeimer will be happy about that!
- In Fullerton two of the three conservative Council candidates, Travis Kiger and Bruce Whitaker, won, but their pal Barry Levinson, lost to Jennifer Fitzgerald, a more moderate Republican. And Jan Flory almost beat Kiger! That would have been quite a story.
- Jill Hardy and Jim Katopodis won in the Huntington Beach City Council race! That was good news to progressive. Dave Sullivan won too.
- In Orange the good news wass that Republican Jon Dumitru lost to Democrat Tita Smith in the Mayor’s race, but the Democrats lost in the Council races.
- Congratulations to longtime Democratic Mayor Miguel Pulido, who won soundly in Santa Ana.
- In another shocker, Republicans Ceci Iglesias and Rob Richardson were the top two vote-getters in the SAUSD School Board race, and liberals Valerie Amezcua and Myriam Tinajero lost. What happened? It looks like their Team Benavides consultant, John Palacio, utterly failed.
- That’s more like it – Democrat Claudia Alvarez beat two other candidates to win in the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Area 5. She will join Nelida Yanez, in Area 3, and Jose Solorio in Area 1, in a now heavily Latino RSCCD Board of Trustees. And this is a pro labor Board…
- Good news in the Capo School District where John Alpay and Gary Pritchard won.
- And in Brea Occupy lawyer Greg Diamond got spanked by Repbulican Bob Huff in the 29th State Senate District, but he did get over 42% of the vote and he is surely gloating now that Norby, his arch-nemesis, lost.
While I voted No on Proposition 32, it is crazy that OCEA and these other unions continue to fund Leos after spending over a half million to get him elected these last elections.
They should ask their voters if they want to continue supporting this guy.
What was stupid was the OC Labor Fed’s endorsement of Jordan Brandman? They really don’t think these endorsements through.
Had they not endorsed Jordan, maybe he would not have received the pro-union voters that put him over Leos. D-OH
It’s not their money so they don;t care about their idiotic decisions
