Dr. Mike Moodian, a candidate for the South Orange County Community College District’s Board of Trustees, in Area 7, has published a new report. “Irresponsible Governance II” is based on public records that he researched at the Coast Community College District. His recommendations are:
- First, it is too complicated to access public records at the Coast Community College District. In the aftermath of the City of Bell scandal, no public agency should be able to prohibit access to information. The district needs to be more transparent and make the process easier.
- Second, the district needs to place considerable restrictions on travel. We live in an era of virtual meetings, and we are broke. Spending $44,708.96 on travel, sizably more than two other districts, is wasteful and unnecessary. Cut all nonessential travel, scrutinize all travel requests before approval and require trustees to submit a detailed report on how the experience benefited the district before reimbursing them.
- Finally, in his original “Irresponsible Governance” report, Moodian suggested the elimination of all full-time health and retirement benefits for trustees, and the reducetion their monthly stipend from $1,027.23 per month to $400 per month. Public servants should be paid modestly, not well, and these part-time officials should not receive full-time benefits.
Kudos to Dr. Moodian for this new report! We hope that his recommendations will be accepted and put in place at the Coast Community College District.
