Imagine if you will that instead of an unarmed Manuel “Stomper” Diaz getting chased down and shot in the back, the victim had been some random white skateboarder in Anaheim Hills? And what if the shooter had been a Latino cop? Oh my. What a different outcome we would have – or would we?
The O.C. Register today asked for calm in Anaheim, opining “The Register’s Editorial Board urges calm and healing at this time of division in the community. We believe a small minority may feel there is something to be gained by inciting further violent confrontations. Nothing is to be gained by fanning animosity on either side of the issue.”
Well yes, I agree that violence is not going to help the mess in Anaheim but make no mistake about it, if the shoe were on the other foot we would today have mobs of white people freaking out in Anaheim.
Most if not all of the domestic terrorist acts in the U.S. have been committed by deranged white people – from the Oklahoma federal building bombing, to the Unabomber, to that crazy guy who bombed abortion clinics, and the nuts in Colorado. And don’t forget the skinheads and their second cousins, the Minutemen.
Here’s the rub – if in fact a Latino cop had shot some white kid in the back, in Anaheim Hills, I guarantee that the O.C. Register would be calling for his head. There would already be a Council recall and the powers that be would be calling for the ouster of the Anaheim Police Chief. Of course they would.
It is easy however to ask for calm when the victims are poor Latinos. What the protesters in Anaheim want is action now after years of abuse and neglect. They want a stop to the Disney company’s meddling in local politics. They want an end to the endless developer handouts by Council members who do not represent the people at large. They want to make sure that more of these mindless Council automatons (such as the SOAR-backed Jordan Brandman) don’t get elected.
More than anything else the Latino residents of Anaheim want to be respected and protected just like anyone else in town. And if circumstances were reversed I assure you that things would already be getting done…and the Register would be inciting the mob, not trying to quell it.
