Did Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach endorse Los Alamitos Council Member Troy Edgar for the 72nd Assembly District? That is apparently the case. Edgar announced that endorsement at the 72nd A.D. candidates’ debate last night.
Edgar was named the OC GOP “Taxfighter of the Year” last December, according to his campaign website:
“Edgar has been a consistent defender of Orange County taxpayers, both in his role as a City Councilman and as Vice-Chairman of the Orange County Sanitation District. In his City, Councilman Edgar has led a real turnaround of the City’s financial health, turning one its largest deficits into a sizable surplus in just the matter of a few years, without raising taxes. And as Vice-Chairman of the Orange County Sanitation District, Troy Edgar has helped lead the District financially to a AAA bond rating saving over $20 million a year for taxpayers on over $1.3 billion in debt.”
No wonder Moorlach has endorsed him! They appear to be of like mind.
Edgar’s main Republican opponent, Matt Harper, used to be the Chief of Staff to Supervisor Janet Nguyen. Believe me when I tell you that there is no love lost between Nguyen and Moorlach. That means it is highly unlikely that Moorlach would ever support Harper.
Harper is also a government leech – he was handed a six figure salary at the O.C. Waste agency, despite a supposed hiring freeze, after he left Nguyen’s office. His job? External affairs. That’s right – he is a PR flak for Orange County’s garbage.
Edgar, on the other hand, owns both a construction company and a high tech consulting firm. Which candidate do YOU think understands businesses better – and which one do you think will fight against higher state taxes? Surely not Harper.
This is not Edgar’s first big endorsement. He has the support of both his local state legislators, State Senator Tom Harman and State Assemblyman Jim Silva. He was also endorsed early on by Congressman Ed Royce. I am no fan of any of these guys, but their support probably means a lot to the GOP voters in the 72nd.
Harper has a bunch of GOP endorsements too, but Harper’s campaign is just about broke while Edgar has a huge warchest. Moorlach’s endorsement will surely open a lot of doors for Edgar.
Harper is a typical OC GOP hack. He even supported disgraced former O.C. Sheriff Mike Carona. I hope Edgar beats him. They are running in an open primary and there is one other Republican candidate, OC Board of Education Trustee Long Pham.
There is also one Democrat running, Joe Dovinh. He recently got endorsed by his state party. There are a lot of Vietnamese voters in the 72nd, but Pham and Dovinh figure to undermine that vote.
I don’t think Edgar can win this flat out but he has the money to make the “top two.” I agree with Moorlach. Edgar would make a much better state legislator than Harper. And Edgar, as a former U.S. Navy man, would be poised to run for Congress when U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher finally retires. You have to figure that Edgar would be a preferable candidate for the U.S. Congress than the slimy politician Harper.
