Will the OC GOP give Assemblyman Tom Daly a free pass again this June?

Karina Onofre Banner

Tom Daly

Assemblyman Tom Daly (D-Anaheim) has already raised over$292K for his re-election campaign, according to Around the Capitol.  So far no one is challenging him in the 69th Assembly District, which is a majority Latino district.

Daly has over the past year buddied up with the unions that tried to defeat him in 2012.

So will anyone challenged Daly?  The district leans Democrat and I am pretty sure that a Latino Democrat would give him a run for his money, but the OC Democratic Party would frown on that.

Cecilia Iglesias

She hangs out with Democrats but Ceci Iglesias is a Republican

What about the Republicans?  The only one that I think could beat him is Santa Ana Unified School District Trustee Cecilia Iglesias, who was the tope vote-getter among three winners of SAUSD School Board seats in 2012.  The other two winners were longtime incumbents.  Iglesias collected over ten thousand nomination signatures a few years ago when she ran against Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, as an independent.

But time is running short. The June primary has already been announced.  I am not even sure if Iglesias could still jump into the race at this point but the fact that she has not done so already is discouraging to say the least.

It sure looks like the OC GOP is going to give Daly a free pass – again.  They pulled their 2012 candidate, Robert Hammond, out at the eleventh hour.  Then Jose Moreno, a Republican in Anaheim, filed to run against Daly and sure enough the OC GOP didn’t support him.

Daly is a long time friend of former State Senator John Lewis, a Republican.  And I am told that OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh and Supervisor Janet Nguyen were involved in pulling Hammond out of that race.  He ended up winning a seat on the OC Board of Education, where he has embarrassed the other Trustees fairly consistently with his odd rants.

Supposedly the reason the OC GOP gave Daly a pass in 2012 was in order to funnel more money to then Assemblyman Chris Norby, over in his battle for the 65th Assembly District.  But he went on to lose to a Democrat, Sharon Quirk-Silva.  She is now facing off against Young Kim, one of Ed Royce’s staffers – and Kim has raised a lot of money thus far.

So shouldn’t the OC GOP challenge Daly?  Why give him a chance to undermine Prop. 13 as I expect he surely would given the opportunity.
