Supervisor Todd Spitzer Calls for Jail Roof Improvements

OC Sheriff Sandra Hutchens presented an improvement plan for jail security in closed session at the Board of Supervisors meeting this week on February 23. Supervisor Todd Spitzer had sent a letter to the Sheriff requesting that the security of the jail roof be addressed “sooner rather than later” to ensure the public’s safety.
“I’m very confident and comfortable based on the briefing that safeguards are going to be put in place immediately,” Spitzer said. “This wasn’t the first jail roof escape. In 1981, Deputy District Attorney David Carter, now Federal District Court Judge prosecuted a convicted murderer for attempted Central Men’s jail escape. Three men with tied bedsheets made into rope broke out the cell’s vent grate and climbed into the ventilation shaft.” Continue reading
