The city council voted 5-2 yesterday to postpone voting on an ordinance that would ban Styrofoam from all vendors in Huntington Beach city limits in order to get more feedback from citizens. The next vote is scheduled for the second week in January. Continue reading
Liberal H.B. Clowncil Members opposed to Safe and Sane Fireworks
I am not a big fan of Huntington Beach City Councilman Matt Harper – let’s establish that up front. (And neither apparently are some other folks in the blogosphere). I remember sitting at an OC GOP Central Committee meeting a few years ago asking the party to not endorse the disgusting O.C. Sheriff Mike Carona – and Harper was one of those who gleefully backed the dirtiest Sheriff in our County history. Harper also worked for one of the most corrupt Orange County Supervisors, Janet Nguyen, who got him a high-paying job at the Orange County Waste & Recycling agency (how fitting) during a County hiring freeze.
All that said, I find myself finally agreeing with Harper on one thing – safe and sane fireworks should remain legal in Huntington Beach, during the 4th of July. Sales of these fireworks help to fund dozens of charities – most of which serve the young people of Surf City. The two liberals on the Huntington Beach City Council – curmudgeons Joe Shaw and Connie Boardman, want to ban safe and sane fireworks – when they should be insisting that their police department enforce the law when it comes to the use of illegal fireworks.

H.B. Councilman Joe Shaw at O.C. gay pride event
The elected Democrats in the City of Huntington Beach had a cow over the legal fireworks on the 4th of July and are now losing it over a daytime music festival called “Wet Electric” that has been set for September 14, 2013, at the Huntington Beach State Beach.
Councilman Joe Shaw, a Democrat and gay activist, declared war on the event on his Facebook page, writing “The city of Huntington Beach is now suing the state over the “wet electric” drug event the state is allowing on the beach. I really wish the state would work with us on this and find events that are better suited to a state beach. Just this past week, a 3-day “electric” event held in NYC had the last day cancelled due to two drug overdoses. It makes me angry that the state will host a drug and booze fueled event because of the need for money.” Continue reading

Allen says they are far more insidious, hindering water-conservation efforts and exposing Californians to dangerous bacterial, food-borne illnesses. “It seems that there are a lot of well-intentioned politicians that are paying more attention to sound bites than sound science,” said Allen, who describes himself as a lifelong surfer and a conservationist. “To make reusable bags safe from bacteria they need to be washed. You take a typical front-loading washing machine, you’re going to use 27 to 40 gallons of water,” and California needs to spare all the water it can.
