Fans and friends of Monahan will be gathering at Skosh Monahan’s on Sunday, January 4, 2015, from 5 to 8 pm to celebrate both the birthday of Costa Mesa Mayor Steve Mensinger and that of Costa Mesa Planning Commission Chairman Jim Fitzpatrick – and to “bust the boycott.” Continue reading
The forces allied for change in Costa Mesa prevailed in defeating Jim Righeimer’s dreadful Measure V – and they were able to elect former Costa Mesa Mayor Sandy Genis onto the City Council. But along the way it appears that lines were crossed – and now we must ask who knew what and who decided to engage in decidedly unethical behavior?
“A private investigator, Chris Lanzillo, hired to tail Costa Mesa Councilmen Gary Monahan and Steve Mensinger said he was sent to Monahan’s sports bar with a woman to see whether Monahan would behave inappropriately,” according to the Daily Pilot. Continue reading
Stop the presses! Fullerton Mayor Sharon Quirk-Silva was losing when I went to bed last night but this morning the voting results say she won, barely, beating Chris Norby, in the 65th Assembly District. Amazing!
It will be awhile before we can parse the numbers but you have to figure that more voters showed up in the general than in the primary election – and could it be that the Latino voters in the 65th actually voted? It sure looks like it.
Other key results for liberal O.C. Democrats:
- John Leos ended up in a distant third place in Anaheim’s Council races – another blow to the OCEA, which blew a load on this race. The winners were Republican Lucille Kring and corporate Democrat Jordan Brandman. The latter was the recipient of thousands of PAC dollars courtesy of Disney and the SOAR PAC.
- In Irvine Beth Krom got the most votes in the Council race, but the Republicans Christina Shea and Lynn Schott also won. And mayoral candidate Larry Agran lost to Steven Choi! And more bad news for the Irvine Democrats – Sukhee Kang lost very badly to U.S. Rep. John Campbell. The Republicans now run Irvine. I can’t imagine that is sitting well with the guys at my former blog… Continue reading

A few years ago, in one of my weekly columns in the Daily Pilot, I brought the idea of creating a hot spot at Triangle Square. Back then it made sense, and it still makes sense today.
Black night/olive branch pizza has decided to move operations from E. 17th Street to the Triangle inCosta Mesa. Triangle owners chopped off the Square word because, I guess, it sounds too lame or because it isn’t square enough to be called that way.
Now, does it mean that with another restaurant bar the number of drunk people will increase in Costa Mesa? Well, some community activists in the east side think that it will, and they are already making some fuss about it. I’m sure they are promising they will fight back once the project gets to the City Council later this year. Continue reading
