“If it moves, tax it.”
A famous politician once used that sentence to describe how legislators look for sources of income – and it is beginning to look like he was right. With this year’s Fourth of July celebrations barely behind us, legislators will soon be renewing their plans to add a tax to Safe and Sane fireworks, which are already subject to sales taxes, license fees and local surcharges.
Some taxes, of course, make sense. But in this case the politicians are planning to jack up the price of Safe and Sane fireworks so California will have more money to dispose of illegal fireworks.
That’s right – the Legislature wants to make the people who distribute, sell and buy LEGAL fireworks responsible for the cost of getting rid of ILLEGAL ones. Continue reading
