83-year-old Westminster Mayor Margie Rice finally retired this month – but she is already seeking to un-retire. When Tri Ta won this year’s Westminster mayoral race, his seat became available on the Westminster City Council. And Rice wants back in.
The best candidate that Orange County’s Vietnamese community had going into the June 5 Open Primary, Westminster Mayor Pro Tem Tyler Diep, dropped out of the race for the 72nd Assembly District. That left two Vietnamese candidates vying for that seat – O.C. Board of Education Trustee Long Pham, a Republican, and Garden Grove Planning Commissioner Joe Dovinh, a former Decline to State voter who is now a Democrat.
Dovinh has “spent $6,699 during the March 18-May 19 reporting period, brining his total spending in the AD-72 race to $16,352. He has $5,493 left in his warchest,” according to the OC Political blog. They also reported that Pham “spent $62,675 during the March 18-May 19 reporting period, bringing his total spending in the AD-72 race to $106,072. He has only $1,412 left in his warchest.” Continue reading
I received an anonymous package in the mail on Friday, from someone in Sacramento. The envelope contained two articles about State Board of Equalization member Michelle Steel’s Chief of Staff, Joel Angeles. Apparently he was charged with assault back in 2009, but he ultimately was acquitted of all the charges. A candidate for the Ventura County Community College District’s Board of Trustees also charged Angeles with offering him a bribe, but that 2002 story went nowhere too.
However, the fellow who sent me the articles was trying to make the point that Steel’s campaign for Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach’s seat, when he terms out in 2014, will somehow be doomed because of Angeles’ shenanigans. I don’t buy it. Continue reading
The race for the 72nd Assembly District has narrowed, with the exits of Matt Harper and Tyler Diep – but the entry of Huntington Beach resident, and businessman,Travis Allen and Los Alamitos Council Member Troy Edgar has kept things interesting. Allen and Edgar have the resources to make the open June primary a very expensive endeavor. So does Vietnamese businessman, and fellow Republican Long Pham, who has also invested six figures into his campaign.
But Allen’s fellow Republicans might be a bit shocked to find out that Allen has apparently donated to Democrats before, according to the website Campaign Money. He reportedly donated in 2010 to: Continue reading
I expected a good turnout at Santa Ana Council Member Michele Martinez’ fundraising event tonight, which was hosted at the home of Council Member Vince Sarmiento and his wife Eva. And sure enough, the place was packed – but that was not the entire story.
For one thing, a lot of Republicans were there tonight, including past CRP Vice Chair Mario Rodriguez, who was a high-ranking official in Governor Schwarzenegger’s administration; Break Mayor Ron Garcia, who works with Martinez in NALEO (the National Association of Latino Elected Officials); MWD Trustee Brett Barbre; developer and consultant Steve Sheldon; and Santa Ana Council Member Carlos Bustamante.
