Robert Hammond got 34.5% of the vote in 2010, when he ran for the 69th Assembly District as the Republican nominee. Incumbent Jose Solorio blew him out with 65.5% of the vote, according to Smart Voter. Undeterred, Hammond is at it again this year. This time he is running for the Orange County Board of Education, Area One, after he quit the race for the 69th Assembly District. I believe he is also running for the 69th Assembly District OC GOP Central Committee.
It appears that Orange Cunty Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly is busy remodeling the money-eating building he bought, with public money, almost four years ago. From what we can tell it might be a move to have something to show for more than 10 lackluster years as the O.C. Clerk-Recorder. Or perhaps it is an art gallery of some sort, based on some of the art already donated and on display on the building’s windows. Or this could be just another complete waste of money!
The real question is how much is this costing the tax payers and are the Orange County Supervisors monitoring the situation here? According to a report by O.C. Public Works it was going to take $5.6 million to remodel this building to make it usable for storage of archive materials. This prompted calls from the Board of Supervisors for the now embattled and non-credible CEO Tom Mauk to make sure this was a good buy. At the end of the day Mauk said that the building was an asset for the county. Read the full memo here. Continue reading
Great Park Neighborhoods developer Heritage Fields El Toro is seeking to more than double the number of homes surrounding the Orange County Great Park, according to the Voice of OC. They also reported that “the developer is proposing to build 10,700 residential units, far more than the 4,894 units already approved by the Irvine City Council. The developer would reduce the area dedicated to nonresidential uses to mitigate the impacts of the new homes.”
Why did the Great Park’s Board of Directors vote to greatly increase the number of homes at the Great Park? Simple. Developer Fees. And you can bet that some of those fees will find their way back to Great Park Board Member Beth Krom’s campaign for Irvine Mayor, and Irvine Council Member Sukhee Kang’s Congressional campaign. Don’t forget that Kang is a member of the Great Park’s Board, and Krom is their Board Chairman. Continue reading
I reported last week that, according to an OC GOP insider, it was none other than Scott Baugh, the Chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County, who, along with Supervisor Janet Nguyen, may have engineered Robert Hammond’s last minute exit from the 69th Assembly District primary – perhaps to help Democratic candidate Tom Daly, who is running against three Latino Democrats. Now an insider from the Democratic Party of Orange County (DPOC) has told me that his party chairman, Frank Barbaro, may have cut a deal with Baugh, to essentially trade Assembly Districts.
However, as Hammond was pulling out of the 69th, a last-minute Democratic challenger named Robert “Bob” Rush was filing to run in the 74th Assembly District. And get this, Rush was a Decline to State voter from at least 2002, through this year, according to the O.C. Registrar of Voters, before he suddenly became a Democrat this year. Something stinks. An OC GOP insider gave me the scoop tonight on what really led to Republican Robert Hammond quitting the primary race for the 69th Assembly District – at the very last minute, last Friday, which was the filing deadline for that race. Hammond ended up pulling papers for the Orange County Board of Education’s Area One.
What my source told me was pretty much what I expected. Hammond did not come up with this scheme himself. Apparently Supervisor Janet Nguyen and OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh were the ones that advised him to leave the Republican Party of Orange County hanging, with no candidate in the 69th A.D.
