Just when it appeared there was some common sense coming out of the Irvine City Council with its approving a Great Park audit, downsizing of its Board and dumping its PR firms, it’s placed the contract extension of the utterly worthless iShuttle service on Tuesday’s council meeting agenda. Simply put, this $6.5 million waste of tax money is useless, needs to be cancelled and have its vehicles sold off rather than continue to insult the rest of Orange County with such nonsense. Newly sworn 3rd District Supervisor and 2014 District Attorney candidate Todd Spitzer landed an Orange Grove column in the Register this morning: A new chapter in Great Park saga. With a somewhat conciliatory tone compared to his justifiably angry monolog at last week’s Irvine City Council meeting, he commends the new Council/Park Board majority for taking control of the Great Park’s mega-issues and financial problems from the Gang of Two (don’t miss this great OC Weekly column by R. Scott Moxley on Larry Agran and consort-in-corruption Beth Krom).
Today’s OC Register interview with newly elected Great Park Chairman Jeff Lalloway was expectedly vague as he’s been at the job for only days, but we’re struck that he did mention the A-word. As we’ve been posting, there’s also no money left — only $20-30 million out of $220 million — it was squandered by past management with the approval of the old Irvine Council/Park Board majority. Of the remaining funds, a “forensic audit” must also be paid.
Kimberly Peirceall writes about Mr. Lalloway:
What he doesn’t want, he assures, is an airport. He says ripping up the former El Toro Marine base’s runways would go a long way toward alleviating any fears from county and Irvine residents that an airport is even an option anymore. Continue reading
After last week’s drama in Irvine — watching City Council scoundrels Agran and Krom find out (something like the California GOP) what the minority feels like after all those years on top — it’s evident that the Great Park still isn’t a done deal. Park Board Chair/Irvine Councilman Jeff Lalloway, an admired and respected local pol, has an impossible task ahead of him — to pay for the damn thing. So far, it’s been a monumental failure. To their credit, the Voice of OC is first to the Internet with last week’s dramatic confrontation between these two powerful local politicians. They’ve put up the well-edited YouTube video linked below that captures both Irvine Councilman/Great Park Boardmember Larry Agran noxious comments re. the Orange County Board of Supervisors (from about ten years ago) and 3rd District Supervisor Todd Spitzer’s rebuttal during public comments at last Tuesday’s Irvine City Council meeting. Last week’s great drama in local politics — the dismantling of the Larry Agran/Beth Krom Monopoly of Malfeasance in Irvine — is bound to be the OC’s 2013’s Political Story of the Year. The stranglehold these two had on the Irvine City Council and the Great Park property they
seized annexed from the County of Orange is finished, unless they regain the Council and Park Board majority in 2014. Count on them to be candidate shopping now (in both parties) and raising plenty of money via Agran’s corrupt Hometown Voter Guide.
The Register ably covered the Council meeting and both Great Park Board meetings (good work by Kimberly Pierceall). In print today is a tepid editorial, First steps on Great Park’s new path, rehashing the three grand changes in the Park’s future. They concluded: Continue reading
