In California, the CTA (California Teachers Association) is one of the most powerful unions, with thousands of members and a massive influence on the dominant political party in this state, the Democratic Party. The CTA is so powerful that school districts find it difficult to fire even the worst teachers, including child molesters.
Locally, in Santa Ana, the teachers’ union, called the “Santa Ana Educators Association” made sure there were no school board candidates’ debates in 2010. They backed the incumbents, of course. Their ally, Assemblyman Jose Solorio, recently complained about the high Latino student dropout rate, in a press release, but he too lined up with the teachers’ union and he backed the SAUSD School Board incumbents, dooming the district to four more years of the same inadequate leadership.
