FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hon. Kevin de León and Democratic Party of Orange County Chair Fran Sdao issue statements on Orange County Board of Supervisors’ vote to enter legal action against SB 54
In response to the Orange County Board of Supervisors’ vote to challenge California state law SB 54, Hon. Kevin de León, author of the bill, and Democratic Party of Orange County Chair Fran Sdao issue the following:
Statement by DPOC Chair Fran Sdao:
“Instead of doing their job to work on urgent issues like homelessness and affordable housing, the Board of Supervisors wants to score points with Trump and Fox News over a pointless legal battle rooted in anti-immigrant hate.
“Those Board members should get out of their cushy offices and go listen to their voters, not right-wing special interests. Voters are sick of these cruel right-wing attacks.”
Statement by Hon. Kevin de León:
“The Republican-controlled Board of Supervisors in the county that gave us Prop 187 more than two decades ago is at it again with another unconstitutional attack on our immigrant communities. I am confident the courts will reject this challenge to SB 54 now, just as they rejected the mean-spirited Prop 187 in 1997.
“This kind of obsessive immigrant bashing is embarrassing to the county and its residents, and seems designed by the Republican Supervisors to court the approval of a racist President and his cronies.
“While California as a whole may be progressive, repeated attacks on hardworking immigrants to portray them as criminals are a stain on California’s history. The people of Orange County deserve better.”
