Republican congressmen Dana Rohrabacher and Steve King, both allies of Pres. Donald Trump, met recently with far-right French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen.
“US Congressmen King & Rohrabacher pay a visit to discuss liberty & shared values w/(next president of France?) Marine Le Pen,” Iowa Rep. King tweeted Monday.
Le Pen, whose National Front party platform is stridently anti-immigrant, also aims to increase police numbers and powers and create 40,000 new prison places according to her party’s 2017 manifesto. Le Pen is in first place in polling for the first-round of the French presidential race, but polling shows her losing in the runoff to Emmanuel Macron, an independent liberal candidate.
In addition to meeting with Le Pen, Rohrabacher is a frequent visitor to Russia and staunch supporter of Vladimir Putin. According to Politico (11-23-2016): “Putin’s top congressional ally is Rohrabacher, the 69-year-old chairman of the House subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia. A former Cold Warrior, Rohrabacher has since morphed into a supporter of better relations with Putin’s Russia, for reasons similar to those articulated by President Trump.”
Rep. King, who, like Rohrabacher, is also an immigration hawk, has met several times with far-right European political leaders including Austria’s Norbert Hofer, Netherland’s Geert Wilders, and Germany’s Frauke Petry.
