Vidak Slams Governor’s Infrastructure Priorities
Sacramento – Senator Andy Vidak (R-Hanford) today sent the following letter to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation in response to Governor Brown’s Infrastructure Priorities list that ignores the state’s critical need to build water storage at Temperance Flat, while prioritizing the controversial High-Speed Rail project:
The Honorable Elaine Chao, Secretary
U.S. Department of Transportation
1200 New Jersey Ave, SE
Washington, DC 20590
Dear Secretary Chao:
The National Governors Association recently forwarded to you lists, on behalf of each state, laying out their priority infrastructure projects for funding consideration under President Trump’s proposed and much-needed Trillion Dollar Infrastructure Plan.
I am writing to provide you and the President some important information concerning the list of 51 projects submitted by an employee in the office of California Governor Jerry Brown.
First off, California’s list includes a project, which is likely to be abandoned, that is completely unworthy of federal funding (or public dollars from any source):
California’s biggest boondoggle to date – the misnamed California High Speed Rail (CHSR).
Madam Secretary, I won’t go into detail in this letter about the multitude of frauds, failures and fiction that are the CHSR project. I am confident that House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and many other California Representatives including Jeff Denham, Devin Nunes and David Valadao, have already filled you in on the foolishness and wastefulness that is CHSR. Even Representative DeSaulnier has said that CHSR will probably cost more than triple of what Brown and other CHSR sycophants claim.
And as we see in the Los Angeles Times, there are serious conflict-of-interest issues now being exposed between the scandal-ridden CHSR and a former employee of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Secondly, California’s list unfortunately does not include what many of us consider the most important and urgent infrastructure need that we have in California:
Building a water storage dam at Temperance Flat – this is essential to help prevent future droughts and floods, something California’s Central Valley is regularly subject to.
This project has been studied and planned for years but repeatedly stalled by radical environmentalists. Brown’s appointed members of the California Water Commission are considering maybe someday providing partial state funding of the Temperance Flat project but an influx of federal funding would go far to get this project started and off the drawing board.
Thank you for your consideration. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you or the President on this matter.
California State Senator
