It was going to be an uphill battle for Asm. Young Kim and sure enough when the votes were tallied she ended up losing in a close raise to her predecessor, Sharon Quirk-Silva, in the 65th Assembly District, by about 1,500 votes.
Quirk-Silva most likely benefited from a surge of Latino voters who presumably went to the polls to vote for Hillary Clinton.
The OC GOP however was able to reelect First District Supervisor Andrew Do, even though his campaign was undermined by his fellow Republicans – State Senator Janet Nguyen and Garden Grove Councilman Phat Bui. Do is sure to get revenge when those two come up for reelection!
And Ling Ling Chang prevailed in the 29th State Senate District, trouncing her Democratic opponent Josh Newman.
The OC GOP has been succeeding with Asian voters so these victories will be a net positive to the party. Now they need to do something about getting Latino voters back on their side if Kim has any hope of unseating Quirk-Silva in a few years.
