BAO NGUYEN CONTINUES TO GROW SUPPORT FROM CALIFORNIA’S LABOR MOVEMENT
ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Today, Mayor Bao Nguyen’s campaign for California’s 46th Congressional district received the endorsement of the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), an organization that advocates for healthcare workers and for quality patient care. NUHW is a worker-led union representing more than 10,000 healthcare workers throughout the state of California. NUHW joins a growing list of labor unions and health and patient advocacy groups standing with Nguyen, including National Nurses United and the California Nurses Association.
“NUHW is proud to be part of the movement to elect Mayor Bao Nguyen for Congress,” said NUHW President Sal Rosselli. “Mayor Nguyen is the candidate that has always stood up for working families here in California. Bao has history of activism in the labor movement, as a labor organizer, and as a strong ally for us.
“In August, Bao put himself on the line for healthcare workers. The CEO of Fountain Valley Regional Medical Center’s administration tried to block our union and Bao Nguyen from delivering the mayor’s letter of support on behalf of the 600 caregivers who work there. Bao Nguyen has a record of holding healthcare institutions like Fountain Valley accountable to their employees and most importantly their patients. He knows the issues that face working families and it’s about time that the 46th Congressional District send a real champion for labor and progress to Washington,” Roselli added.
“I’m so honored and thankful for the support of the members of NUHW,” said Mayor Nguyen. “I believe Washington should commit to ensuring a workforce that is ready and prepared for the 21st century workplace, protected by union safeguards, fair contracts, and provide for paid family leave and supportive child care policies that put parents and workers first, not corporations’ bottom lines. I look forward to continuing my work as an advocate for the labor movement and organizations like NUHW.”
“Groups like NUHW and the people of the 46th Congressional District know that this November, healthcare and workers’ rights are at stake. My opponent’s favorite donors are the healthcare insurance companies that he relies on to power his campaign,” Mayor Nguyen added. “That’s why he voted against universal health care in California, and why special interests are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to support him. What we need is someone who will protect workers and patients, not someone who will do the bidding of corporations in Congress if elected.”
The announcement of NUHW’s endorsement comes a week after Mayor Bao Nguyen issued a challenge to conduct a series of three debates for Orange County voters that Correa has so far refused to agree to. Correa is avoiding going on the record to voters on his policies and votes that have placed jobs, patient care, public safety, and education in harm’s way in Orange County.
