“CAN’T WE ALL GET ALONG?” -Rodney King 1992
By Karina Onofre –Democratic Party Endorsed Candidate for California State Assembly 74th District
As many of you are now aware, earlier this week I proudly broadcast the good news, the California Democratic Party endorsed my State Assembly campaign in Orange County in the 74th Assembly District. I am proud to be endorsed for such a valuable and important elected position, and proud to run as a Democrat. The good news was greeted by supportive responses, for which I am grateful and for which I sincerely Thank You. Unfortunately –as can happen with passionate, driven political activists, this e-thread veered from shared goals to individual animosity. I apologize my well-intentioned call-out to local Democrats resulted in such a questionable exchange.
As I pondered on it, this negative, unproductive behavior has been an omnipresent feature since I have become active in local Orange County Democratic Party activities. As a coalition party, Democrats often espouse radically different issues between labor, women, minority and LGBTQ rights, people power, progressive initiatives, and many others. But what attracted me to become a Democrat was a firm conviction I would work with those who might not share all of my views, and that they would work together with me.
November 8th 2016 promises to richly reward Orange County Dems. Democrats haven’t seen better O.C. Primary Election results –including my own, in 50 years! If we work together in local County, State and national races, we can rewrite Orange County’s electoral map forever!
But a constant stream of petty criticisms, bickering and name-calling, distracts us from our goal, which is to represent as many people as possible, and advance our dreams as Democrats of a Better, More Equitable Society.
Rodney King summed it up for me, when in wake of 1992 LA Riots, he asked, “Can’t we all get along?” Like him, I believe so!
We can and must work more closely together, to build a stronger local party, and create a better Orange County. If elected, that’s the type of leadership I’ll bring to the table and the type I’ll share with my constituents, and with all my elected peers in Sacramento.
I urge Orange County Democrats to believe in each other. I don’t care if I’m not your favorite or your perfect version of an Assembly candidate, but simply ask yourselves who you’d rather have in Sacramento, a Neanderthal legislator like Republican Matt Harper, or me? Mr. Harper has never voted in support of women, Latinos, veterans, low income at risk youth, or even students! If your answer is to support me, Karina Onofre, I look forward to working with you, and finally turn AD74 from Red to Blue! Thank you.
